I have a jungle carpet python and was wondering how close u can have the U.V light fom the nerest basking spot, I have a branch hanging from the roof of my tank, about 10-12 inches away from the U.V light, which is also on the roof, Is this too close I read somewhere that they can get snow blindness if its too bright for them.

Do you have any other source of heat in the enclosure? UV lighting isn't necessary for most carpets, if any.

yeah, i thought only diamonds needed UV and even thats debateable,...

i take my bredli out into the sun from time to time, just incase he might benefit from it,...aside from that he just has a heat lamp.

I've heard direct sunlight on a regular basis can improve the colours on some carpets, such as bredli. But this was only an observation made by keepers, not a scientific study or anything.

As you've said, even diamonds are debatable, reliable sources I've found, such as serpenttongue off here have indicated that DPS seems to be more so to do with temps being too high rather then a lack of UV lighting.

If this UV light is the only source of heat I'd strongly suggest looking into other sources of heat, lamps and heatmats for example. And if you still want the UV lighting in the enclosure have it up the top and only as a source of light, not heat.

Yeah Ive got a couple of heat lamps as well so its not the main source of heat, and yeah I know they dont really need it but its not gona do any harm. I also wanted to eluninate the enclosure a bit more

I'd call snow blindness harm:)

Yes, it's the same as photo-kerato-conjunctivitis and if the UV level is too high they could get it.

Hey not sure if u'l still be checking this thread Jungle python 2, but u wouldnt know the max uv level would you?

No idea and it would depend on the distance as well. If you must use it, use one of the lower emitting flouro's, they should be pretty safe.
