I was watching Sydney and Adelaide at 3am my time after I got off work on the old tube here.

While I understand or "get the gist" of the game, what the heck constitutes offsides in soccer? I never could figure it out.

And how in blue blazes do you get carded? Is it 2 yellow cards and then ejection, red card is automatic ejection?

Maybe after I understand this game a bit more, I'll tackle Australian Rules Football next.

Always thought the off side rule was you can't be behind the last player until the ball has been passed, you can then run behind the last line of defense to get the ball

The rules are you call that game "soccer" football is Aussie rules.

Offside rule is pretty much what dangles has explained.

Think about it, if there were no offside rules, players will stand all day next to the opposing team's goalkeeper just waiting for the ball to score : )

Ahhhhhh! The greatest game in the world. The offside rule is difficult to explain and understand if you don't know the game. When You watch it and play it though it doesn't take long to get the hang of. Have a look at this link. I think it explains it fairly well and has diagram.
Offside Rule - Offside Trap, Football, Soccer

You can get carded for a variety of reasons. Yellow cards are for minor offences and if you get two yellows it equals a red and you get sent off the field. Red cards are for major offences. It is an automatic send off.

Hope that helped. Oh and if you want my opinion skip AFL and look at proper footy (NRL).

Born in Scotland, raised mostly in QLD. Even though I spent some of my early life in Vic and Mum is a Victorian the only AFL game I watch all year is the Grand final. :D

Not rugby, rugby league. Rugby is the term for Rugby Union the game game they play in Heaven according to the die hard fans. The wider world knows football is only played with a round ball!

AFL is king.. you all know it you just dont want to admit it.. :p Carn you mighty crows...

NFL = Very Girly, No action Tea Party with plenty of padding so the boys dont burn a finger on the hot teacups :)
Soccer = Girly Tea Party
AFL = Bisexual Tea Party
NRL = What bogans think football is - Shazza Tea Party
Union = Game played in Heaven :)

(no bias AT ALL in this post, HONEST!)

I was going to say exactly what Darlyn said.. Soccer is NOT Football! lol

On a side note, AFL rocks... Rugby does not.

AFL should have stayed VFL. The other states don't deserve to be in it.

I do find it a little amusing AFL or Rugby is called football when you consider the soccer guys generally only use their feet to move the ball. AFL should be called handball, and NRL should be called "Drink heaps of beer, grab your mates backside in a scrum and have no neck" :D ....okay, joking about that NRL bit :D

Lol I'm so lost!

Soccer is not football
American football is not football
Australian Rules is not football
Rugby is football?

I love American (NFL) football. Its all I really know. Rugby and Aussie rules is pretty cool to watch, those cats beat the hell out of each other. Soccer is so big worldwide and our football season doesn't start again until August, I need something to fill the void. Go fast, turn left (NASCAR) just isn't for me.

Fixed for you buddy.
