No else has noticed no covering over a heat light that is siting on an angle which as we all know will entice a snake to come up and rest on it, we recently had a snake returned to as the owner decided that the enclosure wasn't getting hot enough and so put in another 3 heat lights.. all of which were identical to the one pictured purchased from the local reject shop, so in the lights went and 3 days later they noticed the snake hadn't moved from the light for a while.. turned out it was stuck the fitting it's self so what id they do?? pour water over it!! and yup even if it were still alive it was toast now.. so they threw their safety switch and decided to bring the snake back to us for a replacement and also brought along the enclosure for good measure to show us the problem they were having with heating, they were wanting to solve the heating issue and get a new snake!!
Probably just hits a little close to home after this happens..
sorry, net REALLY slow here at work... but yeah agree with you 10000 percent. Did you punch the 'owners' in the throat?? If not, feel free to pm me... Death of a helpless animal caused by stupidity, how uncommon.....
i belive the sand is more of an issue than a light cover i have been keeping snakes for well over 15 years and only and never had one burn to a snake from a heat sorce what ever it be
Lol how many of you that dont like sand have actually used it and have a vaild reason to not like it?
And feeding is not a excuse, you would have to be a major twit to feed a rodant to a snake on sand.
i have used it when i was about 15 for a childrens display tank and the snake recived a skin infection from the sand i was told by the vet. never used it again for snakes... i do use it for lizards tho with no ill effect!
Apart from impaction due to non digestion, there is also the risk of other Internal damage.
A snakes hemipenes etc invert when defecating & when doing so on a sand substrate particles of silica enter the cloaca and can cause pain, discomfort, abrasions & infection.
i am no exbert but from my experience it also gets stuck in the snakes heat pits, if it goes for a drink or swim then goes on the sand the sand gets stuck in their heart pits.
I keep a few diffrent speices of lizards on sand and its fantastic, The one and only snake i have kept (a darwin) was on sand and again had experienced no problems.
Chrondos dictionary enducing comment sounds plausable but again i dont think it would really be a problem, jmo.
People are too cheap to spend $15 on a book. They don't see it as an investment in their new charge, they just see more $$ they think they don't need to spend. Too often, people want accessories not animals.
I see it every day at work. Try and talk them out of the tacky ornament they have chosen to get the book today get the ornament next time. Never happens.
