Those of you who run websites should be aware of the upcoming SOPA protest. All sites under my control will go dark while Wikipedia is dark.
Hopefully the protest won't be needed as it looks like Obama has finally got some grapes and may stand up to the moneyed interest. We have, however, been down this path before and all previous grapes have proved seedless.

If I had any websites I would follow suit. Good on you guys, what a ridiculous band-aid bill!

And what is the APS position? Is this site to go dark or not?

OK _ I've gone dark. Any attempts to access most my site and you see the image below.
If however you stumble on my site looking for snake removalists on the sunshine coast (and its easy to do, I'm high up on the google rankings) then that page is rendered normally

That is entirely up to Adam and/or his schedules.
I'm currently working on the server side and all the PHP scripts were written by me so this wasn't hard to do. I've added a switch to the page ancestor so it renders differently during protests. WHen this is over I just change
$this->protest= true;
to
$this->protest= false;
and everything will be back to normal

BTW - Does anyone notice how similar Monty and Rupert look?

5 years in jail just because someone has posted a link on my site? No way, we have to stop it! So we decided to join the SOPA protest. Join!

If there’s something you’d like to know about SOPA. Here is the article which also contains
the link to protest site: SOPA: Is This the End of Internet?

Good news, the largest internet protest in history has paid off! SOPA and PIPA have been postponed indefinitely.

lol you really think they will give up , bull
I have been a web site owner for many years and own more than 1
yes my sites were down and locked off redirecting any hits to the anti-SOPA
u-tube page. it is only a matter of time before the usa try again to control the internet
you noticed that after they called to get out of Iraq, they found a new target so quick.

It has been postponed until after the election in November. But the backers are not giving up

Is Rupert popular in Australia? Like what does the general public think of him?

And not everyone was so happy to leave Iraq

SOPA is dead, but the fight isn't over- lawmakers will be on it again pronto, internet users will have to remain diligent.
I worry that it wont take long for the black-out protests to get tired and ineffective.

You would think that after the disastrous state that GWB left the USA (and the world) that the republicans wouldn't be within six cooees of office or that they would at least try and field candidates with IQs greater than their toe count. One can only despair.

The saddest thing is that a lack of education is lauded in that party. They openly disparage ivy league graduates as elitists.
To be honest I'm sad that Michelle Bachmann is out of the running, I would have LOVED to see her in a presidential debate.

I have to point out that SOPA is not exclusively a republican bill, it was co sponsored by a democratic and a republican. Unfortunately the american system is riddled with bribery ( read lobbists ) and not much will change until money is removed from the democratic process. That won't be a top-down procedure either

Good to tie in with the Megaupload star of the day...

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/21/t...ed-file-sharing-site-sought-limelight.html?hp

"When Mr. Dotcom first saw the police, he ran inside and activated several electronic locks, part of the estate’s sophisticated security system. As the police made their way through those, he barricaded himself in a safe room. Officers cut their way through to get him, standing near a firearm that they said looked like a sawed-off shotgun."

"Megaupload’s lawyer has said that “the government is wrong on the facts, wrong on the law.”

The police in New Zealand said they were continuing to search the Auckland property. In all, about 20 search warrants connected to the case were executed in the United States and in eight other countries, including New Zealand.

About $50 million in assets were also seized, as well as a number of servers and 18 domain names that formed Megaupload’s network of file-sharing sites. The police said they seized 6 million New Zealand dollars ($4.8 million) in luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé and a pink 1959 Cadillac. They also seized art and electronic equipment and froze 11 million dollars in cash in various accounts."

I think NZ is going to go broke now :(

Piracy in NZ is like eFraud to Nigeria :)

So instead of worrying about the Lads from Lagos we now need to beware of the Wags from Wellington?

We already have anti piracy laws here - a production company is able to tell your ISP that you're downloading illegal material and the ISP must send you a cease and desist letter. If you fail on the third warning to cease and desist you have a day in court with an instant $10,000 fine and loss of internet for 6 months.

Not sure if it is working or if anyone has even received a letter in regards to this. All I know is since the law came active I've had much faster download speeds, so it must have been a fair whack of traffic for downloading illegal material!
