Hi all :)
I've been researching shedding as my juvenile diamond python has shed twice in my care; and I've noticed that many people are recommending paying strict attention to the tip of the tail in case it hasn't fully shed.
I think that this has happened to Dartanian; the tip of his tail seems to be fatter than the rest of it, and quite hard. It looks as though the tip has kept both previous skins.. what should I do?

How much of the tail tip is affected?
It really needs to see a herp vet. There's a real risk the tail will become constricted, die off, and lead to infection which may become life-threatening. These can get caught, bleed and snap off too making issues worse.

posting a pic might help understand the problem a bit better, and whether it's something you can deal with on your own, or need a vet trip?

Id soak the snake in warm water and use a wet towel to carefully peel the skin off.
Ive had it happen with a few snakes, mainly hatchlings if its missed the first time i usually make sure that it comes out next shed (if i cant remove it myself).
Pretty sure it takes a few layers of bad shed to become a worry.

My diamond lost the tip of her tail from retained shed. I beleive she had retained more than one so by the time I got her the damage was done. Took her to a herp vet and he snipped off the dead bit. Had a little trouble after that with shedding ( had to remove the last bit of tail for a while) but she now has shed her last two times on her own (shes a about 20 months) despite the tail tip being a bit gnarled.

Not so, it can cause an issue the first time around.

Samantha17: I'd be taking the animal to a vet. The swelling and hardening of the tip of the tail is indicative of a problem. If this is the case, and it is not treated, fatal complications can result.
