For the last few months setting up my perfect home, got my big tv, crackin gaming pc, ps3, most comfy couch ever and all my herp friends.
Next up is home audio and this is one subject i know minimal about, what i do know is I want to be able to connect my pc, tv and ps3 together as a complete mediacentre and Im big on movies.
At this point i can't afford a huge 7.1 setup but am looking in the range between $500-$1000

Any help would be much appreciated

I never bothered with a sound system. PC gaming rig done it all. you just use the line in and line out on the sound card to stereo.

If your tv is new, you'll be able to do that without any problems. An s-video or hdmi cable will do it with the pc, just hook your tv up to the video card as a second monitor

What Nathan said was correct. when connected thru hdmi, you will be able to play anything thru your TV with all the sound coming through the surround sound. The TV won't need any volume at all.

I have a similar set up - A decent amplifier (but you can get one for < $1,000 with two HDMI in and one HDMI out.

The PS3 goes to one HDMI in. My Alien goes to another HDMI in.

The HDMI out goes to TV.

Sound stops at the amplifier and 7.1 and some PS3 games is ridiculously awesome!

Blu Rays... Picture to TV perfect, sound perfect!

Want to cruise the web... Alien plugs straight into the HDMI and bingo was his nameo...

Want good TV sound... HDMI out from the TV or in my case I ran out of HDMI inputs so I used the Coaxil sound out from the TV into the amp and now even TV sounds awesomely better...

All this... Well... The amp was around $800 but I splashed out huge on the speakers.... But it works beautifully.

Yeh i get that but im in need of help with surround sound selection.
What brands are good, what sort of features are a must etc

I use Harman Kardon amplifier - but almost any amplifier at around $800 will have at least two HDMI inputs and at least one HDMI output.

Honestly, I would wait. I used to sell home entertainment and an audio package isn't something that should be scrimped on or bought out of impatience. That's when the salesmen get ya ;). I would just use a hdmi to connect your components then save up that bit more. It won't POP but with a little more cash and patience you could get a kick *** system. Around $1000 will get you pretty average gear, it'll sound better but pale in comparison to a well done set up.

Yeh i did susspect tbat would be the case but im buying a new ute in a month so i wont have much cash flow because ill be throwing it all on that

Ended up putting a yamaha kit on layby, way i see it is will be a good enough improbement for me and not to much as to annoy the.neighbors, yht698 im pretty sure the product code was
