I saw this last night and they were almost proud to announce that this new species of monkey wasn't called the Coca Cola Monkey, or the Nike Monkey since it's naming rights were put on Ebay for auction. But I think naming the poor thing 'Golden Palace.Com' after a casino was just as stupid!

The discoverer said it would have been too vain to name the animal after himself and that it wasn't 'the done thing' - I think I would have forgiven him personally if he had.

i dont see the problem. its messing with tradition... but traditional species names havent done anything for the animals.

maybe the casino will actually lobby to preserve the habitat instead of clearing it to build... oh i dont know... a casino perhaps.

ive worked similar areas that were being logged. it's not nice to be able to hear close to a hundred bird species calling and to off in the distance hear trees crashing down.

hes doing something proactive, good on him

edit: i can see why it would piss ppl off tho

The caption under the photo suggests that the monkey in the pic is a Spider Monkey (reference to a fifth limb), when it is actually a Common Marmoset.

Pictures and more details of the monkey can be found here:

The Money paid in the naming rights will be used to protect it's habitat in Bolivia.

lol I see your point BC, I just don't like the big corporate name, especially the '.com' bit  I suppose by also selling the naming rights to his discovery he's opened up plenty of awareness on the animal. Who knows, perhaps it is a good thing after all :?

As long as the scientific name is valid, I'm not too worried about the common name. Professionals in zoos and the like will probably either use it's latin name, or call it the "Golden Titi" or similar.
