Hello everyone,
I'm still relatively new to the reptile scene (I got my first blue tongue 6 months ago) and so far we are getting along great, I've found out his "personality" and what he likes and dislikes and it's all running smooth. So now I want to get another reptile, something relatively small (30cm) or smaller is preferred and something that is easy to keep and has a kind nature, I'd prefer not to have to get a license but I will if i have to (BTW I'm located in VIC) I'm leaning towards some kind of gecko but can't really decide so I thought I'd ask the helpful people of the forum for your opinion
Dan
(I am greatly sorry if I put this post in the wrong spot)

There are very few reptiles you can keep without a license, so you're best of having a look at the list and choosing from there.

Cheers was having a look last night and I've pulled the pin I'm going to get a basic license tommorow

This is all the reptiles you can own without licence. By kind nature do you mean able to handle? If so that rules out geckos, they don't take to handling very well. Cunniham skinks would be a great choice.

Pygmy Mulga Monitors are small, adorable but with the typical monitor attitude, which is heaps of fun!

We have three and they are awesome to watch... haven't really handled them much because they are still so tiny though, but I've heard they handle well.

Ackies are probably the most handleable small monitor, and absolute entertainment if you have more than one in a large enough tank.

Oh cool. Ok not thatnI would recomend you getting a monitir for your second lizard, if you did go that way, I woukd recomened varanus acanthurus (ridge tail/ackie) or Varanus gilleni (Pygmy mulga/gillens). Your best bet being so new would be a bearded dragons (either central or eastern). They are literally the best for beginners and pave the way to keeping intermediate (like small monitors) and advanced (larger monitors, specialist care etc)

I would probably agree with CrazyNut, especially if you want a "kind nature". A beardie would fit that. There are so many colours now to choose from.
Apart from their disposition there is not much difference between a beardie or ackie otherwise, only in their care.

I'd still put ackies as an intermediate species. For one they are escape artists. Monitors in general are not the best handlers, they will tolerate it....sometimes, don't get me wrong ackies are great as far as monitors go. The other issue is they can give you a good scratch (sharp claws). Its also a pretty big jump from a bluey to an ackie.

Okay you have all changed my mind, after going out to a family friends house for their birthday, her brother was there and turns out he has a whole room dedicated to breeding beardies, so I'm going in to get a license and I'll set up and enclosure today and hopefully have a beardie in the next few days, BTW her brother lives like 5 minutes from my house
