I am fortunate enough to have a local freight company that is willing to frieght snakes at a far cheaper rate than AAE. Thanks to the thoughtless actions of a certain herper this arrangement nearly came to an end.

The facts:

A local herper had some alpine blue tongues sent up from Victoria. When he collected them from the depot, the staff asked to see the lizards. He opened the container and took out a bag. When he looked in the bag, imagine his surprise to find a Tiger snake instead of a Blue tongue.
The transport people were very upset that they had been carrying venomous snakes without being aware of it. I only found out about this when I recently sent some snakes and I had to verify that the snakes were non-venomous. The guy on the counter told me that they considered not accepting reptiles anymore because of this incident. Thankfully I am on good terms with them and our arrangement still stands.
I asked the person who received the animals if this story was true and he confirmed it was. He was very embarrassed about it. He also had to amend his import permit to reflect the extra animals.
I could probably put this morons name on here as stating facts is not slander but I think most of you might have an idea of who the person is anyway. Lets just say that I don't think the snakes were venomoids but it wouldn't of surprised me if they were.

Thats just totally wrong...

Think about how the person would be feeling about not getting what they paid for either.
There needs to be a better system. All you have to go on is trust when dealing with buying reptiles from interstate. Once your trust is broken like this, it would be hard for you to it again.

Does anyone have any great ideas to ensure that you will get what you are paying for when buying from people you don't even know?

Pics would be a great start and a conversation on the phone would help too.

I am not sure on who this person is that has done this, as I am only a newbie. But they should be ashamed on what they have done to the person and the freight company.

Sorry, I think I was a bit unclear. The person still received the Blue tongues but there was also some Tiger snakes as well as a 'gift'.

You were clear....i hope you still can use this company because freight can be the turning point of a deal if it is too high.

You are not wrong. It used to cost around $70 to get a snake sent to/from Sydney with AAE. Now it only cost me $12.

The Sydney depot is Heights Haulage in Wetherill Park. You would need to find out off them who your local contractor is and if they would be willing to carry them.
No harm in asking.

That's only a short drive from here..i will try them out.
thanks Greebs

Hey Greebo, Could I just confirm something, these couriers are freighting your snakes by road right?
Or by air?

If by road, what sort of time scales are we talking about for say a trip from Sydney - Melbourne?

Bloody cheap! No wonder you were peeved off! What of hurt to of lost that freight company.

Where does this guy get off. One minute he is telling us that he has done all this work to ensure that we can keep reptiles and publishing books about the corruption in the government departments that license reptiles, the next he is sumuggling tiger snakes from victoria to NSW. Unbelieveable!

I wonder if there is any way of getting DSE to investigate this.

They send them by road. It makes no difference to me really as a lot of the time AAE would send them down to Wagga by road anyway. The drivers are really good, they keep the container in the cabin with them so the temp fluctuation isnt as bad as the back of the truck. I have had snakes sent from sydney and melbourne so surely they would deliver from sydney to melbourne. Just look their number up in the yellow page search and give them a call.
