Turtle activities?

i just got a murray river turtle two days ago and it has mostly been sitting in the weed i set up, then when i come in the room he retracts into his shell like he's hiding.
But he has come out when theres food and eats it, but then goes back to the weed.

Is this normal behavoir for a turtle (btw he/she is a hatchling - 50c piece size)?
Is he just nervous and scared?

Yes he is, he's only a small turtle in the big world .

He will still be in this settling in 'phase' for at least a week.

That's right RT, you are a scarey giant to him, with huge teeth and eyes gorking at him. He will settle when he learns you aren't going to eat him. There is no time limit to offer, just be patient. And whenever you see him stick his head out try to freeze so your movement won't frighten him away again.
