A TURTLE has made a lucky escape from the surf at Scarborough.
Wembley Vet Hospital’s Garry Edgar said the clinic was looking after an Oblong turtle that had been found yesterday evening at the beach.
“They’re a freshwater species that you find in the swamps of Perth, you see them commonly at Lake Monger; this one was found surfing at the dog beach in Scarborough,” Dr Edgar said.
“We suspect someone found it near a swamp in that area and thought the space it should be is at the beach.
“The thing was desperately trying to get out of the water and it was getting dumped over and over in the surf.”
A vet nurse from Wembley Vet Hospital came across the struggling turtle and brought it in to work.
“We’re going to speak to the native fauna rehab people and see where we should release it,” Dr Edgar said.
The veterinarian advised anyone who sees a turtle out and about to get advice from a ranger or native fauna group so they do not inadvertently do the wrong thing.
