Hey All,

I have a woma thats hatched with what seems to me a very large portion of unabsorbed yolk hanging from it. One of the others had a little bit and it dissappeared within a couple of hours.

Im not sure when this little fella fully emerged - sometime over night.

I have it on nice moist paper towel at the moment.

Should I do anything else for it, or just leave it and hope for the best? Theonly reason im asking is that it seems very large.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks Fay, I remember reading that one already and i tried putting this one back in its egg a couple of times but it just comes out again straight away. Will leave it on moist paper towel and see what happens. Did yours have a large amount of yolk hanging off them?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that some you can tie them off and they will drop off.......sound right????

You can tie it off with cotton if you want to, and it will drop off, but it's likely to drop off by itself pretty soon. What you need to do is make sure you change the moist paper towel every few hours so that it doesn't become a source of infection (there's a bit of organic stuff that is wiped onto the paper as the snake moves, and it decays quickly in the warm damp environment of a hatchy tub), and maybe swab the area with Betadine or Chlorhexidine to reduce the chance of infection at the site of the umbilicus.

It is best to leave the animal undisturbed between these procedures to reduce the chance of tearing the attachment and causing bleeding or infection. Also of course, don't have anything in the tub which can snag the yolk sack and tear it.

Let us know how you go with it...

Jamie

Not sure about the dropping off bit. Maybe someone else can enlighten us on that.

I think the most dangerous part is if it gets pulled ...
yeah, one had a fair bit, but a much tinier snake so hard to compare.

The cord disintegrates pretty quickly, usually within a couple of days, and the sack will just drop off. As you say, tearing can be a risk, with a resulting major bleed or infection, so avoiding that is paramount.

Jamie.

Thanks guys. Just checked on the little fella again and changed paper towel and it had noticably absorbed a bit more of it, belly looks plump. Still a fair bit hanging out so will just keep changing towel like suggested and keep an eye on it every few hours.

Thanks again.
