I'm thinking about turning the underneath of my stairs into a big snake enclosure. Does anyone have any ideas or problems with doing this they want to share?
Ideas would be very helpful!

first you will need to put a floating roof on cage ie give some space between stair case and top of cage one thought

Make the base removable for cleaning and have a door large enough for you to get inside for the same reason, or, maybe a removable front would be the go.

Got any photos of the area you want to use ?

Bad idea....I'd say the snakes would get very stressed from all the movement and vibrations of people walking up and down the stairs. Similar to how some snakes can react to the vibrations of loud stereos and the like.

I've finally made a start on the enclosure. I've hung all the plaster board, run all the wiring and cut out the door way. I'll put in the door jam and plaster up all thye gaps tomorrow.
Hopfully finnished by the end of the week.

Ooooh, plaster board may not be the go mate, it will absorb all the nasties from the snakes. I think you would be better off lining the area with melamine sheet.

yes I will agree with africa, you can try 6mm ply and seal it over the plasterboard, but I would go with melamine, for the added strength, make sure you you allow at least 40mm from stair well when you do the top to decrease the vibration from the stairs.

Try lining it with villa board much more water resistant and is used in wet area's of bathrooms. After the plastering of the internal corners you could seal it over with fibre glass resin as is commonly done in side showers. You also could use green board gyprock as that is also water resistant.

Farmdog: make sure you you allow at least 40mm from stair well when you do the top to decrease the vibration from the stairs.

Insulate the outside too to cut down on the noise and vibration and keep the temps inside more stable.

Wish I had the option to do something like this. Rented places suck.

I finally finnished the enclosure, My honeymoon put a bit of a hold on production, but it's finnished now, well except I haven't put the heater in yet, but that's not a big concern as Angel the darwin in the cage is been cooled at present, so I have another month or so to get that sorted out.

thanks farmdog, i'm pretty happy with how it turned out and i'm pretty sure Angel likes the extra room she has to play in.

great idea and i would have to say that it worked well....well done
