I made a post some time ago about suspected scale rot and got some interesting feedback...

My MD did not have scale rot he has a burn(on a large area of his underbelly) from a faulty heat mat I took him to the vet today. Could cost up to a thousand dollars, she knew just as much as I did and had to send photo's to someone else for advice. The only concern(that she could see) is an infection other than that he just needs to heal. I can safely say that I am going to be poor for a while but whatever the snake comes first. My question is: How do you guys think they are going to treat that? And: Why would it cost possibly up to a thousand dollars? Just curious, Thanks.

your trying to say a vet didnt know how to treat a burn? sure your not after somemore free advise so you dont need to pay for a vet

sorry to hear about the burn. my 7.5ft carpet got burnt from a power spike go through a heat mat a while ago. if the cage was kept clean etc then i don't see why she would have got infected. i didn't use silversine cream or nothing for my girl, her temper went from good to bad and is slowly returning.

why it would be costing up to 1000 i have no idea. hopefully someone can help you out with that,

I've seen some really bad snake burns heal up just fine by themselves. Keep the snake clean and dry and warm, just like normal, and it should be fine. Could you post a picture?

If it is a severe burn it may require wrapping to help avoid infection (by acting like a barrier, i.e. skin). A rather long course of anti-biotics may also be required for many weeks after. I can't comment on what it is going to cost but it could add up very quick. From memory the pics did look quite bad.

Thanks for your replies. I did take him to Glenside vet Wranga: 8379 0222

She suspected a burn. To be honest I haven't taken him to a vet since because he has completely healed. I changed to astro turf (from newspaper). He's skin is almost clear and he is eating and drinking and exploring fine. I see no reason to pay a large amount of money. I have taken my dog to the vet a few times over simple things so I do take vet cost into consideration I also didn't have children when I first got my snake so I had a lot more money. Anyway case closed. Always use astro turf it's the best substrate you can find.

The cost sounds rather steep. One of my snakes was hospitalised for 16 days, on fluids, antibiotics and the vet intervening to shed her, then treatment for scale rot and when she died he autopsied her. Total cost $140. And he is an excellent, reputable, reptile-orientated vet.

It couldn't hurt to get a second opinion, a course of antibiotics and a barrier cream usually doesn't cost 1k, if the animal needed surgery to remove necrotic flesh I could see the price quoted...
