so, as the old ad goes, oils aint oils, and USB sticks aint USB sticks.
and they sure as heck aren't simply "USB" I hate when people calll them that, it stands for Universal Serial Bus for goodness sakes. (end rant bit part 1)

so, the thing is, these things range in speed, a LOT.

for example, three different brands:
zipzip lego block micro stick was $50 five years ago (cheaper now)
6.66 mb/s write
33.35 mb/s read

Kingston DT 101 G2 USB Device $6 (umart)
2.23 MB/Sec
10.04 MB/Sec

shintaro $12 (hadley normal)
4.39 MB/Sec
18.47 MB/Sec

as you can see, there is a vast difference between the speed of these three alone (I tested them myself)
of course, prices vary wildly depending on speed and size and looks, but there is a mid ground, IF you can find them, the patriot brand is reasonable priced and FAST

Patriot Supersonic Xpress 8GB USB 3.0 [PSF8GXPUSB] - $19.00 : PC Case Gear $18 8gig 60MB/s read and 25MB/s write when connected to a USB 3.0 port., now sure, it's expensive compared to a $8 job, but, the speed difference is insane, and if you're using your key to transfer files often, or lots of them, speed is a MUST.

and the reason for this thread? my raging annoyance that NO USB key, not any of them, state on the device or the packaging, their bloody speed, so, you just have no way to damn well know until you buy the ^%$#@@# thing!

so I thought I'd write this all, so that someone else, might not have to be annoyed by it either :D haha

anyway, hope someone finds this useful, and that I didn't just rant for nothing :)

Zip Zip | Purchase USB flash Memory bricks encased in a small toy brick if anyone wants a lego block, they're cheaper now :D yay! whish they had these in australia though :(

Nice thread Recharge. I didn't know about this speed difference until I was given a cheap one and tried to transfer a large file onto it. It certainly is surprising how much disparity there is between them.

This is very useful for me :)

I always wondered why the usb I bought a couple of years ago was near $40.00 but now I see the seemingly same thing for around $10.00

Speed is the difference ?

Thank you Recharge

ps... where can I get one of the good fast ones ?

I don't have USB 3.0 :(

I also am impressed by your product testing - how did you do such a test?

Also - is the read/write linear? I've found certain files, lets say 2GB video files take longer than 2GB dot exe files (or similar sizes). I'm not sure if I am imagining things - as I've had no 'actual testing'.

So - to test, would you take a known file size - say 2GB, time using a stop watch how long it takes to write from the hard drive and then how long it takes to copy back to the hard drive?

Last week I needed to copy a 1GB movie I had made for our school's open night. I left my USB drive at home so I asked another teacher in my department if I could borrow his - he was obliging but he told me it was a very old stick.

Of course, age doesn't matter, right?

Well, it did! Considering the stick was only 256MB!!!!

Meh - I remember 1.4MB floppy discs and... I remember the real 0.7MB floppy discs! We had an Apple 2e!!!! (before Apple became shiny and cool).

BTW - the last couple of weeks I've just discovered the joys of overclocking! I even built a quad fan cooling system into my desk running it from an external power ATX power supply from my old 'not working' desktop. I did have a 5 fan system, but one fan seems to have failed - not sure why - but 4 is cool (scuse the pun) - seeming to have temps below 50'C even with overclocking! Noice aye?

if you look in my thread, click on the "patriot supersonic", it's a link to a very good online shop.
:) the patriot supersonic is the smallest physical size fast usb drive I've been able to find do far, some of the others are just huge physically.

UsbFlashSpeed.com: We know everything about USB Flash speed!

Great program/website. It runs the test on your drive and then submits the data to the website.

It also allows you to review speeds of other drives to do your own comparison.

The program also tests various file sizes so it's more telling of real life speeds.

What I read "need nerd nerd, nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd then some more nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd. Nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd, nerd nerd nerd nerd."

Sorry I'm just not that smart...

available for help, not romantically ;)
and you don't have to be "that" smart kimberlyann, that's what people like me are around for, to tell you these things ;)
I posted this so that less tech minded people will be able to find faster USB flash drives if they need them (and who wants to waste time copying files?)
we live in the tech and gadget world we do because of nerds, don't forget that ;)

oh, and even if you don't have USB3 slim6y, it'll still be faster on USB2 than most other drives you can find (especially from retail stores of any type, they all pretty much suck)

and pc casegear is pretty reasonable on price for most things they sell, they have a HUGE range

If you can call it a stick I can call it a USB. Shove your OCD and stay off my case.
