This post might blow over faster than a deck of cards in a cyclone, but does anyone keep any native animals other than their reptiles? With that I mean wombats, wallabies etc?

The reason I ask is that I noticed that you can obtain some of them even on a basic license. I had a guy do a retile party at our house one day for my son's 5th birthday - to be honest, this is what started my enquiries about keeping snakes. To cut a long story short, the guy came over and tossed a smallish wombat into our backyard, so obviously you can acquire them, but where? Naturally a wombat would dig its way out in next to no time if left to run around the backyard, but a wallaby of some description would be a different story. Any thoughts?

I think the only mamals you can keep are the spinifex hopping mouse and the plains rat. Oh hang on, thats for the nsw fans anyway. Not sure what you can keep in melbourne. I think nsw and adelaide are the only states that suck when it comes to keeping out of the ordinary pets.
But here in nsw you can keep a dingo as a pet without a permit or license. I think i might get one when i buy a house. Beautiful dogs they are.

Does anyone know of any websites that tell us what we're allowed to keep?

Liberated - there is a booklet that gets sent out with your license that states what you can get on what license. I'm not sure if the DSE site has the list? If I remember I will scan the list and post it on here for you.

Good luck finding a pure dingo, unless you want to go to fraser island.

ok thanks moosenoose, i will have a look. isn't it all in sicentific names though?

i cant remember the guys name but there is someone that breeds pure dingoes and has like over 100 of them and he reckons he sells a fair few. and with the wombats you got to lay a slab of concrete and then put grass over the top and make sure there are plenty of places to hide as we used to have a wombat when i was younger. and have a fence around the slab.

well i dont keep any ,but i do have a couple of redneck walliablies that come close to the house every afternoon for a feed.

specially in the trading post i saw ring tailed possums in there the other week

yes... I have been wanting a dingo for a while now... there is a guy in the NT who breeds and sells them for 2k

You'll get the same pedigree for $20.

Damn! Knew I'd forget! I'll do it tonight :D I don't think it is all scientific names though. Carpet pythons, if I remember are all listed under the species Variegata (I'm not sure why?). There is separate listings with the scientific names for Diamond pythons however, and various other species, from memory. It was my birthday yesterday - so I've had an excuse! :D

There's a pretty official looking site. About all Natives and regulations.

We know a fella (see photo page 2 on this homepage link below) He's got EVERYTHING!
And, he breeds Dingoes. He has piles of them, and they howl all together whenever they feel like it.
He said, and I trust him, that they are highly intelligent and he's against any cross breeding.
He owns the Dingo that was used in the Azariah Chamberlain movie. Famous dog!

PM me and I'll get a price for you, I doubt it's as high as 2 grand.

In NSW you can keep them. My sister has Rock Wallabies and 2 feathertail possums.

Em :D

He has a photograph that was taken during the shooting of the movie that Lindy wouldn't allow, and it was of the dingo with the "Azariah" doll in it's mouth. ...Errr strange and slightly funny.
- - - and he's got the Yahoo Serious Cocky. lol

That would make a disturbing photo, im not surprised Lindy didnt like it. Its not as though it could be thought of as a happy holiday snap. Never got around to watching "evil angels" but
it no doubt put a spin on the case that was probly far from the facts. thats hollywood.

Keep your eye on all the ads, it is surprising how often wallabies come up for sale.

I may just go and grab myself a Trading post and have a look occasionally. Sounds like they are there.

I read about WIRES the other day. I'll look into it :D

The wombat side of things would more than likely be a real lot of work! The holes & constant digging would drive me nuts!

I knew a guy down the road from me in QLD who had (obviously kept it illegally) a Grey Kangaroo that used to hoon around his backyard. Whilst the Greys and larger style Roos would be too big and possibly get out over the fence, the wallaby would be a better prospect for me. I doubt whether I'd go through with it in the end, but I'm curious to see how commonly available they are, and what the legal arrangements would be in obtaining one. My yard would suit a wallaby I reckon :D

Maybe I should just keep trying to twist my wifes arm for another snake :D :D Perhaps if I tell her that I'm hell-bent on getting hold of a Tassie Devil she'll think the new snake would be a much better proposition  Now that's an idea

In SA you need a fauna permit, its the same peice of paper you need to keep a python. Because I keep snakes, I can also legally keep red kangaroos, emus and ... wait for it ... silver gulls :)
