Last week we were putting in fire monitoring photo points south of the Daly River (Peppiminati and Wudicupildyer) around the monsoon forests and flood plains.

It's been a crappy wet season so we could drive around on the flood plains and swamps without drama.
BUT THEN.......... at 4pm a few storms appeared and it came down without stopping for the next 14 hours.

These are the road conditions next morning as we tried to get back to the new Daly bridge before we got cut off.

We got in a bit of fishing at Wait-a-while creek then bolted for the Daly bridge where the river was rising quickly (already 4 meters over the old crossing).

This hat says it all, it was given to me in 2006 by the senior elder who formed the Dhimiru Rangers at Nhulunbuy. I had just organised the first major training workshop at Cape Arnhem for Top End Indigenous Rangers. Their logo is a black and a white cockatoo to represent the two cultures vital to looking after country. It's my favourite hat.

Tomorrow we head for Wagiman country at southern Daly, then Channel Point and Cox Peninsula to continue putting in the photo points. Cyclone Rusty has sucked our weather away so we should have slightly easir conditions :)

Fantastic photos and experiences as always Steve.

Nice photos as always, Steve. It's always fun to share your experiences, however vicariously.

No rain to speak of here yet. I started uni today and noticed that the creeks on the campus are bone dry. This time last year, they were running and inhabited by aquatic life. It's crazy.

Jealous as usual. Awesome pictures. I'm off to the Kimberley this break so I hope the weather holds out for us.
