Hi as my snakes are getting bigger I was thinking of getting a pair of rabbits to breed some food for them down the track. I have a pair of Murray Darlings and a pair of Bredli, which breed of rabbits are recommended?

What do you guys use out there? Plus how many babies would you average in a litter?

Is this a cheaper way to go than buying rats? Thanks

Byron_moses what breed of rabbit has litters that size?

What is a big litter breeding rabbit?

i breed lop eared rabbits and thats what they have but remember rabbits have 2 wombs so if u dont pull the male out they will end up with 24 and all will die along with the mother

Hi mate. Have a look at the New Zealand long White. There one of the main meat rabbits in aus. They'll get to a desired size alot quicker than your lop ears do. Also check out the Csiro, They developed a few strain and chances are it would be cheaper than buying a lop eared from a pet store. One of the strains is the crusader and i cant remember the other names. Have a look for a meat rabbit breeder near you. Youll be able to see what size the pups are because if they are too large when they pup down, then im barking up the wrong tree. Hope this Helps.

I have never heard of this before and have bred a fair few rabbits. What happens in the wild when the female is mated again after birthing? From my rabbits all that happened was as soon as the young were weaned she would give birth to another litter, i would remove the older babies so she could concentrate on the new litter. I never ended up with 24 dead babies???????

Depending on how big you need the rabbits depends what breed, also what space you have for housing. New Zealand Whites get HUGE. I had one and all she did was dig huge holes (not dads favourite rabbit lol). They eat heaps and need lots of space. Obviously being feed rabbits you dont need them for looks etc.

Your average crossbred backyard pet rabbit should be fine. Dwarf lops are a substantial size and breed well. Dutch rabbits etc. Most are much of a muchness.

my dad wants meat rabbits :), wants to eat them, i might be able to get a snake on the grounds that we wont need to pay for food
id say new zealand giants, they grow pretty damn big, all rabbits breed like psychos so if i was you id make sure i could keep up with them

how do rabbits stack up with fat content? compared to rats that is

Hi Motman I took your advice and checked out the CSIRO and you are right NZ whites I think are the best way to go. They do have the strain of Crusader which is meant to be great but need to locate where we can buy them from. At this stage I have 6mths worth of rats in the freezer but by then I will be ready though getting a pair of kittens will allow them to grow ready for breeding.

Daniel_Penrith thanks for the offer you are probably offering your lop eared you had but as I only want one pair I want to get the right thing that I am after! :) much appreciate it though

Does anyone breed either of the above breeds in sydney?

Good question DarylH I would like to know that as well! NZ whites are born around 100gms and within 6 days have doubled their weight! So wouldnt need to keep the babies around for long just a few days so feed bill alot better than the smaller breeds! Plus if the male is not with the female all the time I can manage the litters I have!

I was going to put them in with my chickens does anyone know how that combination will go?

Hole digging hmmmmmm! :/

I wouldnt advise putting them in with chickens. The rabbits wouldn't stay white for long lol

the average for a new zealand, also known as giant rabbit is 14.
but for a small lot is the dwarf rabbits which average between 1 and 4 and they are small so probly not suitable. im pretty sure that with the normal sized rabbit that most familys have, usually a lop eared they have average 6.

What you have to be carefull of with using the CSIRO and a few other meat breeds
is they have bad mastitis problems when removing offspring before they are weaned. One way of over comming this is to re-mate the doe within 24 hours of having the litter and thus she will start to wean the prior clutch a little earlier than usuall.
There are a few breeders (commercial meat) that have refined thier rabbits over many generations to be relatively mastitis free, but its very hard to get this stock.

To the original posters question, Dont bother trying to breed rabbits for food as it will end up costing you more to do so than you can buy them for!
Check out Wokka on this site as he does rabbits at a good price!

I am presuming that would be the 'Crusade' line that I read, never thought about mastitis in rabbits, I wonder if some cabbage leaves would work :) :) yes good point though must try and work out who breeds them and what their called, thanks for that!

No its not the crusader line, It does have some of that blood in it but its so far removed from that line. I have seen the crusader line loose all the mammary area from mastitis.

oh no thats horrible! Maybe I am better off sticking with the trusted NZ white!

If you can track down any information on this other line you are talking about I would really appreciate it :)

I would like to have some oppinions on the question asked about the fat contents of a rabbit compared to a rat? Though I would be using them at only a young age so probably wouldnt have alot of fat on them!

When my bredlis and MDs are full grown, depending on their size, say 6-8ft what weight food size would they be on per meal?
