I am in yr 10 currently, but absolutely hate school. it is completely irrelavent to what course I want to take in my life. before I start to explain what i want to do, i have absolutely no interest in going to uni or finish yr 12. I want to get an apprenticeship in marine mechanics or steel fabrication, but im not sure what i should do. I want to leave school at the end of this year, by then I will be 16 yrs old. Im not sure what to do, alot of my friends have apprenticeships in becoming chefs and steel fabrication + plumbing and I want to follow the same course. what are your opinions on what I should do? obviously im going to make the final decision and im only LOOKING FOR OPINIONS. Anyone here leave school early and do an apprenticeship? Sme people say its the best thing they ever did..

thanks

I advised my Son in this way....
If you can find a business that will give you an apprenticeship then you have my blessing to leave School at the end of year 10. In the meantime a lot of employers like to see consistency of prospective employees seeing school through even if the grades are not too flash. Reason being most apprenticeships are a couple/4 years in length so it shows you have staying power.... I hope I have made a little sense(I have taken a good shot of flu meds lol) (to the potential critiques.... I have been an apprentice and an employer :) so am not talking out of my bottom heh heh heh)

I'm not going to try to tell you what to do.In the end yes its your decision.i suggest start as early as you can,get some work experience if u can, asking around your local area, try to establish some contacts.I left school at 15 because i had a rough time of it but though i dont regret it,now the option of going to uni if i want to later on is almost out of the question because i didnt finish HSC.

school isn't for everyone, and people learn in different ways.sometimes those who do stay and muck around (not saying you are) make it lot harder for the others who do want to go on to uni or other learning. if it is something you really want to do, and can see yourself doing for a number of years to come, then research it. research things like:
- how long will it take me to complete the apprenticeship?
- how many jobs are there on offer at the moment? (this wil change when the baby boomers finally retire :p)
- will i have to travel or move to find work?
- what are the promotional opportunities like?
- what is the starting wage as an apprentice/tradie?
- how could i progress from the job to another if i find i dont like it?

as long as you have all the information, then you can make an informed decision. and then you can also show your parents that you have put a lot of thought into the decision if it is something they may be wary of. best of luck with your choice

Honestly and truthfully if I knew what I know now it's do the research yourself on what you want to do and don't rely on the words of one person. I did and he stuffed up my life, that was my careers teacher at high school. If you've found what you want to do go and find out all you can about requirements etc from more than one person! Then make your decisions based on your findings. I know a lot of jobs and courses require a year 12 grad and certain subjects passed so it's best to find out all you can before you do anything.
So my suggestion is research what YOU WANT to do and do what's right FOR YOU! It's your life and you have to live with your actions!
Good luck :)

I really dont care on wage, i just want to follow what I think i do best and what im most interested in, Automotive/mechanics and steel fabrication. I would rather chase my dream job and get paid less than muck around with a horrible job i hate just for the pay. I will think about it over the course of the year, and look around. Do you think any mechanics around my local area will let me do volunteer work with them to get a bit of experience? If you think these questions are ones i could follow up on please let me know.. at the moment I suck at school, I just sit there and stare out the window.

I hated school, so I dropped out at 15. But now I love learning, and all my friends think I'm the smartest person they've met. I always envied those people who knew what they wanted to be right from the start. Personally I still don't know what I want to be. Though being an author is certainly something I'd like to try. Hope this helps (but probably not).

I got asked to leave in year 10 after I finished my school cert because I was one of the naughty kids, always in an out of suspensions getting in trouble eventually they had enough an asked me to leave.
I went straight from school into being brickys labourer for my uncles business ( was a huge kick up the bum into reality) I was earning $900 a week a bit more for weekend work and o.t.. After doing 1 and a half years of that I got sick of mixing mud and lugging wheel barrows around all day and wanted to find something I was into other than just working for money.. I always liked working outside and wanted something a bit more easy on my back so I went into a landscape apprenticeship finished my 4th year of my apprenticeship and being fully qualified I'm now working for a good mates dad and will be taking his business over next year, not bad for 23.
The best advice I can give you is think about want you do, it's a bit easyer to get up at 5 every morning and go work all day if it's something you want to do and have an interest in.. Try find a a part time job while your still at school even if it's just at woolies or something so your employer see's you have a bit of work ethic.. I'd give you a bit of part time work but I'm in Sydney.

Hope this helps in some way and good luck on your journey in to the big wide world mate lol

thanks all of you and especially vennomous1111 youve given me alot of confidence in my choices. So mny people have tried to shut me down on my choices but its what i want to do. i currently work a little bit with my father in a furnature shop for a bit of cash and am looking for a part time job at woolies, coles etc. thanks heaps guys :)

I am 41 and still don't know what I want to do!
When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.
Hey mate…keep an eye out for those open doors…it will fall into place.

I Finished year 12 because I didn't know what I wanted to do, so it worked out for me because I kept myself open for so many options.
My partner on the other hand left year 12 and started a welding apprenticeship because of the money and hated nothing more than his job. He is now working as a kickass waiting supervisor at a restaurant that lets him keep all his piercings and tattoos displayed and I'm pretty sure he loves his job more than me ;)

So I think if you can wake up every morning for the next four(?) years and be happy with your apprenticeship and it's what you want to do at this point in time absolutely go for it! :)

Just remember, it doesn't matter if you change your mind down the track. There will ALWAYS be the option of finishing year 12, going to uni etc. Find something that makes YOU happy :)

i was in the same boat after failing at school teachers told me i was a no hope. i got an apprenticeship as a electrician. now i earn more money then they probably do. do whatever intrests you. pre vocational courses help to get into apprenticeships (i got lucky).

being an electrician is good because you actually have to use your brain unlike plumbing or bricklaying( no offense). i would suggest doing something like this or carpentry/cabinetmaking. you dont want a trade where you dont think because it gets so boring after a while.

just my opinion

sorry shouldve read the other posts first... i would suggest going to your local college/tafe and get some info on courses it will help you decide if you actually like doing it or not. may aswell do it while your young dont wanna get into the wrong trade and regret it

If you can get an AP that you think you will make a career out of it then leave school but if not just stay in school and have fun, honestly the best time of your life if you make it over the next 2 years. I just finished year 12 last year and for the past 2 years i new i was not going uni and was going tafe ( becoming a PT ) and yeah funnest time ever. I had mates leave after year 10 for AP's and the ones who picked something they like are still doing them but the ones who didn't left in between 3 months and about a year and it's a total waste ( apart from the lil slave money ).

^ yeh that guys right :)

And see if your school can set up some work experience for you in the trade you wanna do or if you can get a related poop-kicking/labouring job in that field of trade during the holidays. I know too many people who've gone into apprenticeships and left after a week or two because they hated it with a passion.

Keep us updated on your final decision anyway, as long as your learning something in the end, you can't go wrong :)

In the middle of the year i am doing a week of work experience so ill try and get a mechanic job then. I absolutely love motor mechanics. I do Automotive and robotics and electronics at school because it will help me, and I absolutely love these 2 subjects. I am just hanging for those 2 hours each week when i get to pull apart a big 6 cylinder engine (we are currently pulling apart a holden 161 red motor). I just couldnt see myself doing anything else. this is what i truly love. Ill try and look around for anyone wanting an apprentice and try and get some volenteer work around my local motor mechanics. Even if its cleaning after them, as long as it helps me, i do not care.

I think that my decision to leave school was rushed and unthought out, but it worked out in the end for my I'm 22, fully qualified and now earning more then anyone in my family because i work hard if you ruly believe its the right path find an apprenticeship.
Saying that if you can't find anything straight away stay in school and study till you have a definite career path.
In the end it is your decision how your life pans out don't do what your friends think is cool or whatever do what makes you happy

If mechanics is what your into check out diesel or Heavy vehicle mechanics plenty of positions available and you'll be earning good money.. Whatever you get into all the best with your future mate.

yes I was looking at that Venomous. I have been searching for an apprenticeship and heavy vehicle and deseil mechanics are needed everywhere. Might look into it :)
