Going to pick up a couple of herps on sunday and it's a long drive there figure we should make the most of it and do some other stuff to the west of Sydney. Happy to go national parks maybe something along the hawkesbury but needs to be accessible for a family with small kids. So what's around that area worth doing?

Nothing haha. There are a couple of nice picnic spots around Windsor but unless you want to drive further up the mountain it's kinda boring

We only have to do the pick up in Richmond, well be traveling up from south so anywhere to the south west or west of sydney

Blasphemy! Don't you know Windsor is full of important historical sites and amazing historical buildings?? Plus they have jelly wrestling at the jolly frog.... oh wait, 'family friendly' :D

Whereis tells me there are a couple of national parks out that way?

Lol I was a kid once and I don't remember "staring a old buildings" being a favourite pastime :p.
There are definitely a lot of cool historical sights but without someone to show you around and describe stuff it may lose some of the excitement value. Fun fact though - if you go to the Macquarie Arms it's the oldest pub in Australia :p

Jolly frog you say. I am intrigued lol. You can always stand around in the rain at KFC carpark in Windsor waiting to buy mices lol. That's what I did last time I was out that way lol.
