G'day all!
I have two thriving woodie colonies out on the balcony.I wanted to breed crickets but God damn they are nowhere near as easily bred as woodies.. they need egg trays and incubation and stuff, blah. Nuts to that.
Now I thank my lucky stars I turned to woodies because I shudder to think how much it would have cost me to keep buying crickets to feed the zoo, but the other day at the pet shop I thought I'd buy a box of crickets for a bit of variety for the animals. The two ackies I have have never had crickets in my care so I thought I'd give them a treat.
They REALLY enjoyed them and I enjoyed feeding them more so than usual because I feel the entertainment value with crickets is way higher. When I throw the woodies in they don't get a few steps before being eaten, and if they do manage to hide they stay there and don't come out until night... In the end I have dead woodies in the water and all over the enclosure.. I found crickets much more interesting. Because they can jump, the ackies were going crazy every which way for them, and if they hide they come back out as they are active during the day.
Now, I'm not going to go back to crickets ($$$) but wondered what your thoughts were on crickets vs woodies for ackies and other monitors/lizards? I figure they are about the same nutritive value... but the crickets seem more "fun" haha
Cheers
