Hey guys,
I've always had a fascination with reptiles & amphibians, I went from my first pair of toads at the age of 10, to keeping geckos for afew years and now I have cut down to just one bearded dragon (who is my pride and joy!)
My partner has been very good to me, being patient whilst I trawl around reptile stores getting excited over the colours of their animals! Now he seems to have caught the reptile bug. His birthday isn't untill July, which although it seems ages away - Is just far enough away for me to do some serious research into what I can get him.
I have been thinking about this for awhile, as I'm not normally one to condone giving pets as gifts - However, I know he is very keen to get a snake, and a his own license. Every time he see's me doing something to Frankie's tank (the B.D) he asks questions, then he'll go and get a book and read some stuff about keeping reptiles etc.
I'm trying to put him off the scent by saying we can't afford it and that snakes cost a fortune etc etc. The truth is, we can afford a reasonably priced snake (<$250) and to run a basic setup (something with a heat mat/cord, UVB and a thermostat) and we can defiantly afford to feed him/her rodents as needed.
Basically, the snake I choose needs to be patient and calm, able to be handled and most importantly it needs to grow to no more than 4ft I would say. If anyone could give me some constructive advice on where I should start, I would really appreciate it.
Just to add afew points
- I have handled afew snakes that belong to friends so I am confident on how to hold them and on letting them get used to my scent, being calm and patient also.
- We are expecting a baby boy in May so it would be nice to have another pet that is long lasting - To grow with our child.
- I was thinking that a Children's Python or perhaps a Stimsons ( I know he likes the look of both and I've heard they are good to start )
Ok, sorry about the long winded essay - just want to get as much info as possible and let you guys now that I have been thinking on this for a while.
