So it’s been just over 12 months since I took over ownership of Aussie Pythons and Snakes and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the patience, feedback, advice and support through the transition period with its up and downs. All site stability issues that I could see at the time are now addressed, we have implemented some new features and the general "attitude" seems a bit more relaxed which I am taking as a positive. Realistically we are still fighting the Facebook scourge as well as the previous “APS persona” but with membership still slowly rising and some decent discussions being held, I feel that it’s been a bit of a win for everyone and that APS is slowly coming back..

For anyone interested, here are some numbers with the changes.

And some more exciting news, after looking at it on and off for a very long time, I I have finally found a way to resurrect all the lost threads from over the years. It’s going to be a long process to fix it, but I’ll spend as much time as I can in getting it done sooner rather than later.

Heres a quick snip of some of the threads I have managed to get back so far...

Congratulations Stuart on a great first 12 months; let's hope it's only going to get better in the future. The whole atmosphere on the forum is friendly now, without any of the sarcastic nastiness that tainted the site before. Discussions have been held in an intelligent and meaningful way (even the one that got out of hand still had meaning and depth), and there are no more personal attacks.
And well done on getting up the old threads; there is a lot of information on there that is invaluable to new and old keepers alike.

Congratulations Stu!
And I'm very excited about old threads coming back! Awesome job on that one!

Can I ask what happened? I was logging into APS multiple times a day and it was one of my most frequently used sites 8 or so years ago. I sold most of my collection off and APS took a back burner for a number of years and now that I'm starting to grow my collection again Ive noticed it's just not the same. (I'm not saying this is anyone's fault but I've noticed the active members is definitely down from the APS I know from when I joined and was active)

Cheers,
Dave

Yeah, from a person that used it literally every day for many years, to come back and see it a bit flat is disappointing.

But good work on keeping it alive.

It's a bit quieter than before, but without all the BS. A much better forum now, IMO.

But what was the BS? I remember throughout the day, there'd still be 100+ active members. I don't think I've seen more than 20 at a time since I've been back, has FB and other social media really destroyed the forums? When I left I remember there was a **** storm due to jags/crossbreeding.

Nice work on the thread revivals Stuart. What sort of hours have you spent getting them back?

Fair amount mate but its worth it. To be honest, it is easier than I originally thought now that I have stumbled across how to do it but it was leading up to that and just getting time to sit down and nut it out that took the longest.
Now I know the fix, I actually feel bloody foolish due to earlier comments of "It can't be done"

Long story short mate, we had a few issues last year that lost a ton of info. That coupled with the feeling of over moderation, favoritism etc etc just caused things to go down hill.
The Jag debate still simmers under the surface but hopefully it will find some measure of peace :p

Thanks buddy. And the numbers thing is a concern however it is rising, very slowly, but it is. Facebook doesn't help though

I remember when you were a moderator yourself, big transformation. That time was a time where arguments broke out daily, people were more or less trolling bullies, and threads were delted for no real reason (I guess mods were deleting threads that had the potential for arguments, and with the ammont of argumenst that broke out well can't really blame them). All in all I think you (Stu) have done a great job. As I have praised you before, I hope you get to continue doing an awesome job.

I myself prefer forums rather than Facebook. And I'd be interested to know just how many of those threads I posted in.... might have to go exploring a little me thinks!

Well done and thanks for everything you've done to keep this thing going. And I might add that since I've been visiting again, the interactions have definitely increased!

Thanks for the kind words all, I am just glad I am able to help the bigger picture...

You're doing a great job Stu! The patronage thing pretty much parallels the decline in the "acquisition" phase of the hobby/industry I think, as breeding became more easily achieved and the availability of reptiles as pets put them within reach of anyone wanting a snake or lizard for a pet, the oversupply of animals means that transactions are now far fewer (just ask anyone wanting to sell bredli or BHP babies how much demand has dropped off...) and the market has slowed and steadied, but it won't die, it's just in a different phase. There are fewer new owners, so fewer new members on these forums seeking advice, and the member interactions are more discussion oriented. Just my opinion.

I agree whole heartedly. The only reason I even use Facebook is non-hobbyest family members and freinds and the fact that the majority of the comunnity is on there (but in truth quality often beats quantity and the forums have a pretty damn high).
pythoninfinite BHP still fetching $800+ or has it dropped a lot more? I remember selling my 1 year old BHP within two hours on Gumtree for $480 lol it was amoung many adults which were at an $800 minimum (thats normals).

CrazyNut, I'm currently trying to sell our 2 year old BHP for a lot less, with no takers. While I agree with Jamie's comments, I also think pythons are no longer the "trend" in the hobby. Partly because of saturation, and partly because those only interested in making money from the hobby have moved on to other reptiles. I'm expecting an explosion in monitors for sale in the next few years.

If the posts in the forum are anything to go by, the Monitor surge has already taken off!

I just really hope people do lots of research before delving in because Monitor's are not a creature to be taken lightly!

Yep, both the above posts, I think, are indicative of the evolution in keeping. Python (in particular) availability & management has seen them become the "standard" first critter - cheap to buy & easy to keep. I think those who have moved further along in the hobby - not content just to keep a python as a pet - will look for new challenges to expand their interests, and will consequently become more specialised as their knowledge & interest increases. I was talking to my very good friend who was selling black blueys at the recent Central Coast Expo - he was swamped with open offers for his beautiful lizards, but said those with pythons for sale moved very few animals on the day.
