Looks like maybe coco mulch (bark, not coco coir (small fibers that resemble dirt).

Don't mean to hijack or take focus away from tragedy...But what results did you find from the past necropsies?

Sorry it took this long to get back to you. One passed from liver failure. If I remember correctly it was due to old age.(14 y/o leopard gecko) The other had a tumor in his brain.
