The researchers say both heads are working well, eating and moving independently.

They're hoping to learn if it has separate digestive tracts and whether one head dominates the other.

It's about nine months old, but they don't yet know what sex it is.

It's native to Spain, Portugal and France. The farmer is from Alicante province.

Zoologist Vicente Roca says the snakes can grow to 1.6 meters long.

He says snakes with two heads are very rare but not unheard of - he knows of isolated cases in Honduras and Argentina.

Gordon Burghardt, a University of Tennessee reptile behaviour expert, is serving as consultant in the Spanish project. He says he's studied two two-headed snakes during his career and both times the heads were so independent they even fought over food.

"You can have these fights go on for hours," he said.

One was a black rat snake and the other was a ringneck snake, both found in Tennessee.
