umm... well considering what i've been told i'd have to be stupid to pass up that oppertunity.. if you find it i'd be more then happy to take it off your hands... how much did you want for it??
Cheers
Megz

Reptilegirl,
When I said you could have it I meant just that. I have many double copies of books so its no drama, just postage I suppose. I shall have a look although I've just moved so it may take a while, shall let you know.
Cheers.

Weigal is better than Cogger on keeping information. Cogger is a great aid in identification.
As said before Cann is the mann for shelled herps.
Ehmann's book from the Encyclopaedia of Aussie Animals- Reptiles is great again for identification and distribution info.

Has anyone mentioned Gow's Complete Guide to Australian Snakes 1989? It has some useful info particularly if you want to punish yourself then read the section on collecting snakes when we are not allowed to...bummer.

The books I consult the most are
Cogger's, Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia(fifth volume is sufficient, the changes in the sixth arent that substantial)
Cann's Australian FreshwaterTurtles(like hen's teeth)
Ehmann's Encyclopedia of Australian Animals/Reptiles(saw it second hand in Andrew Isle's catalogue)
Dave Vella's Wires/Reptile and Amphibian Rescue, Rehabilitation and release manuel
Blue-tongue Skinks-Contributions to Tiliqua and Cyclodomorphus-edited by Robert Hitz, Glenn Shea etc-Mathias Schmidt Publications
(might get it from Mike Swann)

I forgot Steve Swanson's book on keeping lizards in captivity. I can't find the scaley thing atm to give better details

Theres also some cds you can get pretty cheap, the missus just got me australian reptiles by Wilson & knowles for $2.50

re top

With Wiegals book be careful about the bit on egg incubation it dont say to open and let air in every so often,a guy i know lost four clutchs of eggs following these directions.Eric Worrell was a legend and pioneered work on venom research as well as being the author of the first reptiles of australia book the precurser to coggers . Olive i have a signed in search of the taipan also it is a very interesting read and will be collectable if signed.

Yesterday I bought 'Care of Australian Reptiles in captivity' for $19.90. Great book I think :)

Coggers " bible " sold for $295 on ebay last week.
Another great read is "song of the snake" by Eric Worrell. Published in the early fifties, he talks about his expeditions to northern Queensland chasing Taipans for venom, big scrubbies and his trips toChapell Island catching big Tigers. Catching tigers along the Murray river, Crocs in Kakadu etc.

Dave Vella's Wires/Reptile and Amphibian Rescue, Rehabilitation and release manuel

peter do you know how much this one would cost?? and approx how old is it?? i'd love to get into rescuing reptiles (next course is in september i think) and a good book wouldnt go astray.. cheers

Hi Megz, It isnt available unless you do the Wires advanced reptile course.
The course is great but its up to you if you want to go through all the hoops to get to do it.
You'd need to do the Wires basic reptile course first. As far as I know you dont need to be a member but it helps you get a place. I think David said theer is a course happening soon up your way.

G'day pete
yeah there was mention about a reptile course taking place in september but i've just checked the news letter and theres nothing about it there... so i might give the reptile coordinator/specialist a ring and find out what the go is... i'm a member of the northern rivers wildlife carers so i should get a place (hopefully).
cheers for the info.

Id be intrested in any modern turtle books (freshwater) also Aussy gex books N.milli in particular, any new frog books? :D

Most of the books mentioned in this thread are available from various sources over the Internet.

I have used ABE Books on a number of occasions and found them to be 100% reliable. They source books from all over the world. Have a look for specific titles - like Worrell, Song of the Snake - they list its availability from dealers around the world. You place the order with ABE and they organise deliver.

i also picked up a couple of books from a cheap book place.. A complete guide to reptile of australia and a field guide to reptiles of new south wales... these four books cost me about $50 and a donations to Australian Freshwater Turtle Conservation & Research Association. it must have just been my lucky day!!

I've got the WIRES reptile team for the 2 day handling course on 5th & 6th November, it'll be held on a property about 50 km's south of Tamworth. I don't know what other care groups can participate but if you
PM me i'll give you the teams contact details.
