hehehehe Someone thought I was telling a porkie when I explained the term "Bless You" in regards to someone sneezing. I get sick of hearing it quite frankly  Keep your medieval curses to yourself!

I said did you know where that saying was derived from? Well?... Not a clue!!! Well, let me enlighten a few of you

Someone sneezes and we say, "bless you." (Incidentally, that practice comes from one of the plagues of the Middle Ages. When someone sneezed it was a sign of the onset of the plague and others would wish the suffering one God's blessing.)

Anyone feeling lighter in the knowledge of that?? hehehe

Isn't it also ur sneezing out the bad spirits and ppl say bless u because ur getting rid of them ??

Yeah I always thought it was to do with some crap like your soul trying to leave your body or bad spirits or something dodgy like that...

I think that term is also correct.

The origin behind saying "bless you" when someone sneezes: Medicine during the dark-middle ages was based on the concept that disease and sickness was caused by evil spirits (ie manifestation of satan). For example, curative procedures for madness, headaches etc during this period would involve drilling a hole through the skull to expel the evil spirits from the skull.

Sneezing was also interpreted as expelling demons. Therefore, when one was sick and sneezed, everyone would respond "God bless you" in holy praise for the expulsion of evil spirit.

Coughing was never interpreted as releasing demons, and therefore never incited responses of "God bless you".

Just keep away from me with the power tools though okay

lol craig :p. i thought it was something like a sign of the devil or sumthin so "bless you" is like an attempt to kinda save their soul :?

you gotta ask yourself WHO CARES

You do care Marty! Cos next time you sneeze you'll be thinking:

A) Is that Lucifer I'm about to blow out my nose! and/or
B) Have I somehow caught the black plague

Be scared- be very ascared

RE: Re: RE: A bit of Crappy trivia :)

its said to stop the devil from getting your soul. When you sneeze its ment to release the soul so bless you stops the devil getting it.

Trust me, i'm a soulweaver :)

And here I was thinking that 'sneezing' was a reaction to nasal irritaiton

Actually, I do medieval/early modern European history at uni, and the ideas about disease and the 'cures' for them are absolutely mind-boggling.
How a deamon makes one pregnant I don't know...

Well, sneezing is the closest thing you do to an orgasm. No other process will make your eyes squeeze shut like a good sneeze or orgasm eh! Ever tried to do either with your eyes open.

The challenge is on, but post pics or it didnt happen

Apparently (recent study reported in the paper) all your body functions stop when you sneeze, even your heart.

sneezing

i was sitting beside a woman on a plane one day, and every time she sneezed she quivered uncontrollably. i asked her was she ok, and she said she had an illness whereby every time she sneezed she had an orgasm!
i asked her if she took anything for it, and she said she did - Pepper!

I have heard it said that a good sneeze is akin to an orgasm.

I have that explaining an orgasm to a child can best be done by comparing it to a sneeze.

To me sex is nothing like sneezing and sneezing during sex does nothing to enhance the exprience.

Who led me down this path?

sneezes

sorry trader,
didn't mean to lead you down a path like that, was only relaying a story from my past!
if it was as good as an orgasm i wouldn't bother taking my anti-histamines during summer for hayfever!!!
