My 9 and 7 year old sons caught a medium size skink in tha garden on Sunday morning. They begged me to keep it and as I had been being a bit of a grump for the last few days I said yes.
It was a nice animal about 10 inchs and very well coloured. I sent them inside to put it in a container and then to come back out and start looking for food for it. My plan was they would get bored turning over every rock looking for insects and decide themselves that it was best to let it go and look for itself.
After 15 mins they were still inside so I went to investigate.
Well I finally found them in their bedroom with the first aid kit spread everywhere. The skink had dropped its tail. Their was a tear in the youngests eyes as my eldest held the skink and he was trying to apply a band aid to re-attach the tail.
I explained what had happened and they all cheered up. That afternoon after enjoying a few small roaches the shorter but still full of life skink was released.
Lessons learned all round.
