The only way a snake can choke on BC was if a bit went don't it's trachea (wind pipe). I don't know what happen to your tree snake Sarah so i wont assume but normally a snake will just swollow it with the food.

I've been feeding snakes of all sizes on BC for about 2-3yrs and have seen hatcling carpets and childreni swallow it right up to adult BHPs and waters and as yet have had no problems what so ever.
My snakes don't swallow it very often normally their mouth brushes it off as they swallow.

I have never seen or heard of a first hand experience where someones snakes has died directly from swallowing BC, Anyone?

Hi NoOne

I basically agree with your comments. I use BC for all my snakes and have had no problem so far. The BC doesn't swell that much when wet but I must admit I don't know what happens to it in the snakes gastric juices. One thig I would suggest (and this is based on some advice I got from POPP) watch out for any staples in the pellets. I suggest getting a lage magnet and just passing it over the BC as you put in the layers. I've seen a variety of bits and pieces in the mix and my biggest concern would be from staples.

have you contacted zoo med about the ticks?? I once bought a heat mat and it had a staple right through it.

I have used calci sand for my blueys and it really starts to stink after a while

when the tree snake got the bit of bc in its throatit was not eatingbut went to strike with its mouth open and hit the bc

:p B.C is 100% purely organic made up of staples & plastic & the occasional piece of paper thrown in.But saying that i still havent come up with any better solutions other than just paper which is only easier not better looking.Yes i spear headed the hot debate against b.c but after looking at other products its prolly the most practical substrate i can find,if i had more time to pick thru it & take out the crappy bits i would more than likely use it on snakes. :p

Hey alex,
The answer is yes i have as i work in a pet shop(where i bought the eco-earth) and the major supplier of zoo-med products were having dinner with my boss so i got all my money back and 5 rat pups aswell :)

Cheers,

 Just for something different. I have tried lots of substrates and now I only use newspaper and on top of that 1-2 layers of handtowels - usually in a brown or dark green colour (to look natural). It soaks everything up (urine) and is easy to clean (just remove soiled ones and replace). Once a month I remove them all and wash them in repti-clean/or weak bleach solution. Underneath hide boxes they keep the boxes and the enclosure warmer.

I use the ZooMed bricks you talk of for their ability to hold water and create humidity for my Rainbow Boas and many of my Scorpions and Tarantulas. But, before I use it, I soak and deep-freeze it for 60 days prior to putting it in my cages. No guarantee but this freezing generally kills any unwanted pests that my live in the substrate. I have not had any problems yet (keeping fingers crossed).

Hugs and Hissessss,
Maria

What you are saying makes sence , and cause i read the info on the plastic covering and it says processed hear, covered hear, manufactored hear from places around the globe so if this keeps occuring we could have a a breakout hear

Cheers,
Jeremy
