Hi all,
I was just up at a petshop in Sunshine, Melbourne and was having alook at the lizards and snakes and turtles they have there, as ya do.
I notice a black headed monitor with a small blood blister on its nose and it was dragging its nose against the glass. (I would assume the 2 are related) so i thought I might just asked the staff what was happening. I went a bit further down the isle and saw a coastle carpet (i think it was) that has only part of its belly skin gone and the rest was sort of half on and half off.
I thought these 2 things were pretty bad so i asked to speak to the manager, and after a few minutes of heated debate about the care of the animals I was asked to leave the shop.

my question is, should i do somthing about it, would it make any differnece in the futur, and who would I contact about it.

any advice would be apreciated.

I had also noticed a stumpy tail and a bluetoung rubbing there noses on the glass quite fast

If you feel the care of the reptiles was sub-standard and there was some neglect, go ahead and dob 'em in. Zoe (Ouzo) will be able to tell you who to call ;-)

That would be living hell, er, jungle. Anyone who has been there has seen that stuff and worse going on. Makes you really sick
They get complaints all the time, and I've heard they often get reported but nothing happens (this information could be wrong). If you do decide to report them, please let us know how it goes.
I must say though, their snakes are kept in more naturalistic conditions than mine; I make sure mine are parasite free. I've seen some horrific mite infestations in living hell, particularly the one in Fawkner.

Thats really the sum of it. Where you offeneded by what you saw and would you feel that it would be wrong to allow they animals to remain like this. It is in the end your call. No one else might bother.
The balls in your court.
My personal opinion is that injured and /or ill animals should be banned from sale.

good on you mate i hope you do, do something about it even if its just a phone call to the RSPCA for neglect and sales of unhealthy animals. dob the cruel bastards in i say.

Thanks!!!
Yes I must admite I was pretty upset at the whole situation, so I will speak to zoe or luke.

I wouldn't dop them in to the RSPCA. IMHO it's best not to get them involved as those bastards want to ban us from keeping native animals, including all reptiles and frogs and this would give them an opportunity to twist the facts and use it as ammo against us.

Interestingly, in an article in my local paper this week it was said that a spokesperson from RSPCA has called for the banning of the sale of any animal from a pet shop altogether, including cats and dogs! You'd only be able to buy them direct from breeders or something, they are still pro cat and dog, unfortunately.

Good point sadji! But I think I might have to err on the side of the animals. If pets shops are going to treat reptile like this, then maybe it is a good thing.
I of course realise not all pet shops treat the animals like this and by making the animals more accessable to newbies to our hobby (including myself a few years ago) they help to expand the general acceptance and awareness of australian reptiles and amphibians, but I can't help but think each animal needs to be cared for as an individual if we are going to keep them in captivity. It is somthing I am going to think about!!

if you want to see bad go to the australian bird and reptile company.

by the way no one gives the **** about reptiles down here rspca couldn't give a flying f about them and D.S.E only care if the books are right.

Mate, I was there today as I was passing and they, while bad, are nowhere near as bad as living hell. I will not cross LH's door for fear of infecting my own animals, at least I was game enough to go into abrc.

ring the RSPCA. It amazes me how people have to ask wether to put places and people like this in? I know here in Australia we have the mentallity of don't dob on your mates but that doesn't apply when there is children or animals involved. If it was me I would have stood right there in the shop and called the RPCA on the spot so that they can't fix it up before they got there.

They won't fix it up anyway cWazza, and I can tell you that they have definately been reported before on more than one occasion.
It is a sad ****-hole!

The reason I asked is because I wanted to see if anyone had any experience in the situation and if anything had come of it. (just like africancicheeeeething said).

RE: Re: RE: Advice please!!!

i hope the owners of these dodgy places come down with a few diseases of thier own - and then no one helping them!!!!

But ooohhhhhh, that would be cruel wouldn't it!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Re: RE: Advice please!!!

Westy, whenever I come home from a pet shop I am a walking blob of TOD when I first enter the herp room :)

RE: Re: RE: Advice please!!!

They shouldn't be able to get away with keeping any animals in sub standard conditions and by the sounds of it this living jungle of hell should be brought down and any other pet shops like them.....they should be lagged in to the appropriate authorities, not rspca but maybe NPWS.

This is why i hate the fact that regular pet shops can sell reptiles, and if any shop is going to sell them it should be a specialty reptile shop only...we have enough breeders to supply more than enough reptiles for those who want them.
