Thinking of going to Alice/Ularu in a fortnight.

Any one been there?
Any tips?
Know any good herping spots?
Is it a waste (herp wise) at this time of year?

Also I don't want to take the car off bitumn(?) so that limits my choices

Front wheel drive?

A friend of mine has a new prelude and holy hell she's a fun one to drive. Front wheel drive cars and handbrakes are the best invention. :)

"A dingo's got my camera!"   Sorry, bit tasteless, just came out.

sad about the fraser island dingos, the ones in the centre will be next, too many tourist feeding them, they become pest, (steal babys lol) then get shot.

Agreed, there should be rangers armed with sling shots who teach the dingos not to get too close to campsites. Saves a lot of grief further on. And there are fines for feeding dingos, but I don't think they are often enforced.

I used to see the dingoes on Fraser all the time. I practically lived there LOL I remember one time while I was at Lake McKenzie, the dingo pups thought it was a great game to nick peoples beach towels. The funny thing was when they'd parade up and down the shore until the swimmers saw them, and then run like hell up the beach with the towel in their mouths with an angry swimmer in tow(usually they'd drop it once the chase started). Although, probably leading them off to get gang tackled by 6 other dingoes waiting around the corner LOL

Fuscus,

spent quite a bit of time around both ularu and alice (they are further apart then they seem on the map) most of the main tourist areas are now easy to get to via sealed roads,

places of note would be kings canyon and ya have to visit bojangles when you are in town, not a bad feed for the counter meal. Also the reptile park heading west out of town is a good way to spend a few hours.

It is never a waste herp wise the foothills are always good and the bed of the todd holds many secrets on the south side of alice (towards the gap)

Have a good trip and be sure to take the camera, i am sure you will see plenty without ever having to leave the road.

Take care
Matt

Fuscus,

was there April last year, you'll have no trouble getting to the major spots in your prelude. Stuart Hwy is sealed all the way from Port Augusta to Darwin. Sealed roads to Uluru, Kata Tjuta (Olgas) and Kings Canyon. Also west of the Alice as far as Glen Helen Gorge. Saw several Molochs crossing the highways on the Lasseter, Stuart and Barkly Highways see my gallery at http://www.aussiepythons.com/module...ame=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

Not herp related, but a mate of mine at the Alice Springs Desert Park told me that when at Uluru, if you go to the sunset viewing area at sunset, wait til sunset, then when everyone has left, apparently large numbers of spinifex hopping mice run all over the car-park area looking for scraps left by the tourists.
