 Our carpet monty, died suddenly this morning. He was ok when my wife took the kids to school, but 20 mins later i found him limp and breathing his last. I kept him warm and called the vet, but he slipped away.
There was no warning at all, he recently shed and was looking great, no lethargy or any outward sign of ill health. He had not resumed eating yet, but that was expected.
Im very sad and shocked, the kids dont know yet, they will be heart broken. We had him for 2 yrs, and we all loved him, even my wife who was always shy of him is in tears.
Thanks to all who have helped with advice etc over the last 2 years, monty will be missed badly.

Oh no!!! Not Monty!! I'm so sorry Inny, that's terrible for you to lose a member of your family like that.

(((((HUGS)))))) for you both :( :(

ohh dude, sorry to hear it mate, my thoughts are with ya mate.

Alan.

Thankyou Nome, its such a huge shock, I was only reading about cwarrens scrubby dying recently. Bad things must happen together. I was looking forward to a long time with him.
We buried him out back next to our old dog who died last year. Makes me want to quit, yet i know i did everything right, i was a nut about it. vet said he may have had an internal infection, during winter, without showing any sign and with the weather beginning to warm up, its suddenly quickly advanced. (faster metabolism) cant beleive hes gone.

That's horrible mate, I know Monty meant a lot to you. As you said though, you did everything right, some things are just out of your control. So sad to hear it :(

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. It was so bloody sudden and unexpected, he was normal and active this morning and within 20 mins he was gone. He was 3 when we gothim, and the last owner only gave the breifest history of feeds and sheds, no way of knowing anything, although she did say he had been treated for a blood infection at one stage.
perhaps we will aquire a healthy hatchy, atleast that way we can be sure of its history.
Ill be on the look out for a hatchy, soon i suppose, we'll see how the kids take it.

no others Fuscus, he was our star. yes if we had had others i would have done, for surety re pathogens, virus or other contagion. hed had no contact with other snakes though. :(

I am so sorry to hear about monty...........That happened to us last week with one of our jungles. Psycho.........He was fine at three in the morning but when we went to clean his cage he was dead..........Took him to the vet to have an autopsy done only to find out it was septicaemia from a burn he got a while ago.........and we didnt even know he had a burn............we did it all the right way too..........and razza was devastated..............an autopsy on a snake will at least give you a fair idea of what happened............I would definitely do an autopsy again...........gives you a sense of closure

I would dearly like to know exactly what it was but somehow it would seem an insulting violation, he was really one of the family, strange to think of a reptile like that but we were really fond of him. We have laid him to rest out in the back garden. im crying like a bloody baby asd i write. I dread telling the kids. we were quoted $40 to the vet to have a look, but test and tissue samples wopuld run to the $hundreds. He reckoned there wasnt much point in just having a look since its not likley to be immediatly obvious ,given he seemed in excellent health before hand. its a possibility it was damage from fatty liver or something but to be sure test wetre needed. no way of knowing how the last owner looked after him. he had some scars that she was reluctant to explain in much detail, and im kicking myself for trusting her frankly.
might have been alot smarter to start with a hatchy from a trusted breeder, you live and learn i guess.

oh inny!
you have my deepest sympathy, if you need a hug i'm here

Very sad news dan,Miss M was just wondering for other members that may unfortunately go through this, how much is an autopsy on snakes?

cheers popp

WTF.....you were only saying the other day how good he was lookin after shedding   ......sorry to hear mate.

ours was 45.80 a north gosford...........dont think they are much more than that though..............the in depth ones would cost more i think.........

Instar,
Very sorry to hear about your loss.

Don't rush into any hasty decision's, re: giving up, it's natural to feel that way after a loss.

All the best.

Neil

Really sorry to hear that also Inny! It's the worst sort of thing to have happen when you've got no idea why!

By the sounds of it you gave Monty a better chance than where he was initially! Might have been just one of those fluke terminal things that any mortal life is subject to! Even to say that, it's still no comfort to you! Condolences! :(
