Thats sounds like a good idea Slatey, if they could create a large enough structure and enough outdoor space for the animals, focus more on a selection of our animals mammal and reptile and why not amphibians too. Maybe they could give a pass to both taronga and its new zoo, then tourist would visit one on the way to the other and spend money at both places! Taronga does need money! As for noise/pollution, dont think its significantly worse at either location. 1 million cars a day through the city creates pollution all the way to homebush, spread by convection currents etc. ? anyway, what can you do, goverment wont
legislate or allow construction of solar vehicals because the world economy(oil) would collapse. if your worried about the animals, "Ride your bicycle" :D

Pinkie, the people who want to go to Taronga will still go there. This new place is just designed for people who only want to see a couple of Australian animal icons before going home. There's also a lot of people who come over to Oz on business and don't really have the time to go to Taronga. They would certainly avail themselves of a facility in Darling Harbour.

And judging by your comments on the way Taronga is being run, you sound like you know someone on the inside.

Hi Hix, yeah I can understand your point, but I reckon its maybe one advantage/pro with a gazillion cons coming with it.
Animal welfare is my main concern, along with spatial issues

oops I pressed Submit before I finished lol

Animal welfare is my main concern, along with spatial issues, there is barely enough space in the city for us humans as it is. There are many rules and regulations these days and I think this Animal World would need to start off with a helluva lot of money and much better location to fulfill them.

Yeah I do know someone on the "inside" lol ;)

I really enjoyed my day at taroonga zoo
i thought it was well run and all staff that i spoke to were very friendly
overall a great place !
wish i lived in sydney i could go to the aps gathering then

Don't get me wrong I think Taronga is a good zoo. However, I think its not the best zoo in Australia. I think it used to be and I think it has still got potential to be again if they get it together :)

Lol Mick thats kool, and how did you guess :)
I do reckon Stevo's zoo is up there in the top 5, not just because of Steve but it really is an excellent world-class facility. The other wildlife park I adore is The Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas FNQ.

ITS WILD!!!
ITS HUGE!!!
ITS THE TERRITORY WILDLIFE PARK!!!

Wild World also has a very excellent reptile collection!

Close to home i love Steves although it has got a little exspensive in the last 2 years
about 10 mins away we have alma park zoo lots of monkeys and i have been told they have some snakes now since the last time i went there
I think for taroonga it also has one of the best views of sydney that you could ask for and that made it even more enjoyable for me
i went there a lot with my schools for excursions i think we went every second year ! that and the trips to the blue mountains they were fun 2

When I went in February they were building an extension, a rainforest experience. Half the park was being bulldozed, parts were closed off but nothing much seems to be getting done.
This is all fine, but the rest of the zoo was pretty atrocious.
There were so many cages with nothing in them but overgrown weeds and rusting bars, falling apart cages with animals in them, the cafe was revolting and falling apart, some of the enclosures were not clean enough...

Yeah but apart from that it's OK yeah?

I think the mini-zoo is a great idea.

lol I cant wait to go there.
Aren't the tv catchphrases funny!
The Billabong Sanctuary here: "WE'RE AWESOME!"

The other wildlife park I adore is The Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas FNQ.

How's it doing these days Pinkster? I used to be involved with that one when I had the adjacent Resort to look after :) Keep threatening to go back up there just to see if any of the "old ppl" are left up there :)

I was there last year Afro and it was positively thriving :) It truly is my favourite wildlife facility. The layout and concept is fantastic.

You'll love it mags, watch out for Charlie Eclectic though if you do the breakfast. He loves to try and mate with the back of ya head :)
