RE: Re: RE: austin vs cobra

I never said he wasnt an entertaining idiot ! :D

Thats not the kind of drama that encourages realistic intrest in herps though Slatey, just fuels fear and the shovel mentality. Thats my opinion.
Atleast Crikey doesent inspire fear of snakes!

RE: Re: RE: austin vs cobra

Yep he makes everything look dangerous and really stirs up every snake even pythons,i think he's a tool.....gives us people in the hobby a bad name i reckon as has been said!!!Did anyone see him wrestle that large anaconda, man what a goose!!!

RE: Re: RE: austin vs cobra

Yeah,

Venomous snakes actually arent dangerous when you respect them.

When cleaning mine I just hook em out, I dont even have too touch them 99 percent of the time.

Anyone who ****s around with venomous snakes like that is a ****-wit, and isnt a herper.

Its not entertainment at all.

Speak too people who know him off the camera, he is just like that in real life.

Whether you like the guy or not....it's showmanship, which is what he's paid to do....bring in TV ratings. I dont think he gives herpers a bad name. His documentiaries are entertaining and informative which are dramatised to appeal to far greater audience, 'non- herpers' , who would otherwise be disinterested...

Austin Stevens who is sixty years old, has owned and managed three successful game parks in Africa, spending a life time working with big game on a daily basis...He lives in the scrub in Mamibia, has no wife, kids or present family...He has been attacked by large game on many occasions....like when his Landrover was charged and rolled over by a elephant,... the elephant scalped him....hes living it, getting paid to do what he loves, for how long, who knows?

When working with elapids you'll have to handle them sooner or later, accidients happen, miss the bin?, whatever?... When working on films you have to free handle them,... the better at being handled, the better the set-up...
When filming in Oz, with a mate of mine, one shoot required a day of 'film-takes', handling tiapans in a burning canefield...to the point all involved received blisters from the heat...hot day, hot tiapans, who's going to do it?....he proved more then capiable.... interesting to note that his contract allows him to be filmed until dead?, if he's bitten. The Oz episode was aired in America this week. Lets not let SHOWMENSHIP, be confused with ones experience, as a herper with a life time of working with elapids most of which i can only dream of....somes got to do it, someone who can.

So exactly who are you Indicus?

Reason I ask is that I personally know the the two people who did the behind the scenes work for the Austin Stevens taipan shoot, and since one of them was me, and you arn't Brian Starkey I'm a little curious...

I also know the guy who did the other behind the scenes work with various species, and you arn't him either.

Brian did a bit of extra last minute work to get the film finished - but that was done long after Austin flew out to the US and only involved the production crew sending out a cameraman. Just when did you meet the guy to be able to give such an expert opinion?

Cheers

David Williams

PS: It's spelled T A I P A N

David thats right i personaly didnt meet or work with Austin....however i did work with and meet both members of his crew with Brian in the last minute film shoot, and can relate experiences that were conveyed to me by Brian and those that had spent considerable time working with him on this shoot and others.....i was asked if i could do the taipan shoot but was in brisbane that week. The fact is he is at first a experienced herp at heart and a showman second....this is what i was trying to relate by explaining his Tiapan shoot, and the dangers involved.....it takes experience, which only a few herpers could do without a hitch....including Brian and yourself

QuoteTo give as in hoby bad name?

Comon people we don't need Austin to do this.

QuoteAtleast Crikey doesent inspire fear of snakes!

I don't know anything about him and do not care that much, but stil can't see much difference between Austin and sir Irwin running arown african vilage beging for water to wash his eyes spit in by cobra.

But I must say I do like to watch all shows about snakes and wildlife. Mabe I am bit naive or stupid. I just prefere it more than some idiotic programs like dancing with star. I am sorry but Daren Hinch is not turning me on at all. :D But my wife love it and I don't think les of her. We are all different.

This thread is typical example how people can have different opinion. I understand people who have serious interest in herping to be upset with Austin show. Sory to upset some of you by watching his show with interest, I am mainly interested in animals.

Love or hate him, he is showing wildlife on TV.

Well put Slatey, I too watch for the wildlife, the human host are neither here or there, unless its Sir David Attenborough of course, who can speak intelligently about the animals. :D
Id have thought, Slatelatina and Derryn hinch would have something in common LOL

I fully agree Slateman....but unfortunatly most docco's to do with herps now follow, in Steve's footsteps, to get the rating's, thats the way its going(dramatise)....sad but true. i wish the public as a whole would as most of us, just enjoy seeing and learning about herps for what they are.....

You are right indicus. But reality is that if the show do not get rating, we would not have it at all. When you watch this programs, you have to do as when you read newspaper, selectivly and between the lines. On the end it is always something there what interest me.

I personally dont like the fella, dont think he really cares about the animals. I let him use one of my animals for his shoot and got it back minus its face and with pnuemonia. The person helping him on the shoot quit and brought my animals back to me.

But i still watch his shows. ha ha ha . He just better not run into me in a dark alley.

What do you mean minus it's face?? exactly what happened?

Yeah what's the go there pike1,how did your animal lose it's face and end up with pneumonia?I highly doubt it but can't say for sure, but i doubt it would be Austin Stevens himself taking care of the husbandry side of things with the animals used in his docos,he's the"main man"so i'd say there's definitely other people behind the scenes who actually look after the animals.

What snake was it that this happened to pike?If it were me i would be a very angry person recieveing an animal back in the condition you describe after being used in a doco,or anything for that matter
