basking spot temp for beardie

ok, in the past l have used a temp gun to gauge basking temp.. i can't find the gun and l have re arranged yoda's enclosure.
If l use a thermometre and place it where the basking spot is, is that going to give me a close reading??

yup where ever the basking spot is , thats what u want to monitor .

but wouldn't the thermometer pick up the ambient temp?

if its a probe version of thermometer then place the probe on the hot spot [ weather it be a branch or rocks or what ever]

no it's just an ordinary household one..
