I thought yellow was a barbata and pink was a vitticep
i been thinkin mi beardie was a barbata lol

my centrals have more yellow in their mouths than my friends barbarta.
(its not from renal failure cos its always been like that)

i think the main difference is the spikes on the backs of their heads.

yeah I find its to do with head structure, spikes, and patterning...and a little bit of colour, although colour can be pretty much the same some times

Easterns have dots on there heads, yellow/orange mouths and the spines on their tails form ridges ))))))) unlike centrals who's tail spines form no pattern.

Hello

Hello,

True, the coloring in the mouth isn't always indicative of a barbata or vitticeps. Sometimes they can be a cross.
The spikes are a great way to identify them. Barbatas have splayed spikes on the sides of their bodies, as well as horizontal rows of scales all of the way down their backs & tails. They turn very dark when out in the sun.
I guess the centrals turn dark too, but I don't think they have the numerous spikes as barbatas do.

Ive got a funny feeling the pet store I got him from wasn't the greatest. I know, should have got him from a breeder, but too late now..

Actually, its a good thing you did get him from that pet shop. You gave the little fella a chance that way. Definitly an eastern! Personally I think they have the best personality too. Make sure he gets plenty of UV and calcium and be sure to feed him plenty! Just be sure you only feed him small food items, as baby beardies can die if they ingest somthing too large. Small size crickets, small mealworms and very finly chopped vegies, all dusted with calcium.

Yup he's gettin plenty of UV! He's often taken outside for some natural sunlight while sitting on someones hand at all times. gets him used to being handled and gets lots of UV. He's gettin fed a lot! I honestly didnt know such a small liz could eat so much at one time!

And i kind of agree about rescuing the beardie from the pet store. ive deliberadly done this with a kitten before.. saw her when i was walking past a store i know is dodgy (a lot of my birds (cockatiels and budgies) came from the guy who owned the pet store. he went thru a marrage breakup and ignored his breeding animals for the pet store. as far as i know, he killed 2 pythons, a number of lizards, lots of birds and a puppy from lack of care. basically, they were rotting in their own wastes and starved to death. I only know this because his wife was worried about the animals, contacted a friend of mine, and the wife told us to take the birds) so yeah.. i saw this kitten, knew what kind of a crappy person it was being looked after by, and bought her. never looked back, she's the best cat ive ever had. more like a dog, follows me everywhere! (literally.. she follows me to the dam, the shed, my car, around the yard, everywhere. gets upset when she can see me but cant get to me lol) :D

sorry for the long, offtopic post!

Hello

Hello,

yes same here, though some dragons around the "intergade" line, that look more like vitties also carry yellow mouths and maybe visa versa.

Hello

Hello,

Oh you have an Eastern or a Barbata, that is cool! The yellow mouth is so pretty huh? That is neat. Post some pics for me if you can. Thanks.:D

Heres a bit of an update, with the help of my awesome mother back in brisbane (I'm still in townsvile.. will be home for 5 weeks in june/july. YAY!) who is babysitting this gorgeous guy for me. (well some of you may not think he's a nice lookin beardie, he's nothing special but he's gorgeous to me)

So yeah, when we got him he was cold, malnourished and underweight. Now I think (from these photos and from what my mothers told me) that he's doing much better now: very active, a very eager feeder and has put on some weight.

Here are some older pictures (including the ones on the first post in this thread)

Here are some newer pics (about a week old) and to me it looks like he's put a bit of weight on, which i think is great!

what do you guys rekon, is he gettin better? my mothers told me he's very active now and loves chasing crickets around his tank when he's not handfed.

I couldnt tell you much about his health, ive never kept beardies b4 but I think he looks pretty amazing. The natural camoflage that he has makes him so interesting.

he loks more 'plump' but he still has no fat stores in his tail.. they will come as he grows.. he's certainlyeating..

i wouldnt use the leaves and twigs.. i would be afraid of impaction. slat etile is a 100% safe and natural substrate, unlike sand..

Yeah, he's still getting fed three times a day, not sure how long it'll take him to build up some fat stores.

thanks for the comments!
