Have a pair of 8 month old pygmy beardies that only want to eat roaches. They very rarely touch their vegies. Will they just start eating more veggies as they get older? Or should I withhold the roaches to get them to eat a few vegies?

Cheers, Chase.

i had the same problem when my inlands were young, i just kept offering salad and veg before i i fed insects, after a while they get used to it. now they eat whatever i put in the cage.

when they werent eating much salad i dusted the crikets every time with calcium, and fed them stacks of gut load(the crickets) . the vegies or salad the beardies did eat i tried to sprinkle with a bit of wombaroo.

Pygmies are notorious at being funny on the veg, even at 18 and 20 months old my pair show no real interest in their salad, if they're in good condition and have nice fat tails, withholding roaches for a few days might help. Could also try a bit of cut and fill, snip the back end of a freshly killed roach, squeeze out the insides and stuff it with veg, might help them get a taste for the veg. Mealworms in the salad can also help but mine are too smart for that, they nose through the veg until they find the mealies

they will eat more veggies as the get older, does it matter that they only eat roaches because they are better for them and way easy to breed than crickets. and dont jump into water bowls.

If you have fussy beardies then feed your cockroaches the good stuff. Then you are loading your roaches with the nutrition your beardies could miss out on by not eating their veges. So feed up your roaches, and they can pass their healthiness onto their predators.

I would still offer the veges to your beardies. One day they may surprise you and just start eating them, out of the blue. But to avoid the cost of veges that you're throwing away, buy frozen mixed veges and only thaw out a little at a time. Cheaper than wasting the fresh stuff and just as good for them.
