hey guys is there anything else than fluon to stop woodies escaping and where can you get fluon??

vaseline, a thin layer works best,..

i tried fluon but went back to vaso....

The only thing about vaso, is I keep going to grab the tub and getting my hands covered in vas.

I found vas be too messy and esp when cleaning it gets stuck in it and you need paper towel etc etc...
www.theherpshop.com.au has Fluon ADI for $30 a bottle I think, I use it on everything that woodies are in now, even the little buckets to feed out of, my colony has been going well for 3+ months now.

It seems expensive but all in perspective I guess...

could you have a holle right in the middle enough to stick your arm in or would they get out of that????

I've been using vaseline, but just bought some Fluon (should arrive today sometime).
The reason I'm changing over is because the vaseline runs absolutely everywhere especially in the warmer
weather. It's been extremely messy. I can't wait to start over with a fresh tub, egg cartons and Fluon.

I'm curious as to why you went from Fluon back to Vaseline?

i found vaseline worked better, once the fluon has been on for a while they walk straight over it, needs reapplying alot more often than vaso.

a thin layer doesnt run and isnt messy, ive also used olive oil when i couldnt find the vaso,...

regarding stuff getting stuck in it, i scoop out the poo rather than pouring it, my layer of vaso hasnt been changed in almost 2 years (since i last moved) and its still clean and keeping all my roaches in,...

What SYNeR said. Vaso's would be all right now, but come summer time, it gets runny and you finish up with a horrible mess. The Fluon seems expensive, but that $30 will take you a veeeeeeeery long way.

If it needs to be reapplied occasionally, I'm fine with that.. I'd much rather that than the mess my current colony is in.
Besides, I need to do some maintenance on it every now and then anyway (feed them, clean, etc).

If it ever gets to the stage where they're able to climb out, I doubt they'll be too interested.. They seem to prefer hiding away in the cardboard.

im using vaso and i do not find it to be messy at all, all you need is a thing film around the top. as for the cleaning and stuff, i have a set up that is sbasicly slef cleaning all you have to do is shake it a bit ( moving it to get woodies out is enough) and it all goes into a catching bucket and then the bucket is taken out evry now and then to the lawn

Not sure what you mean, can you take a pic?

Yea, a pic would be good. I can't see any feasible way of making it easy to empty the container from underneath (if that's what you mean) considering how small the baby woodies are and how easily they could escape through small gaps..

The only feasible (or at least easy way with minimum DIY) way I can see is to tilt the container so all the excrement goes to one side, then scoop or vacuum it out.

i bought fluon from the herp shop a few years back and use it on my woodie breeding tank, i think i reapply once a year if that.
I have a log and egg cartons in there so they dont bother climbing the glass as there not fans of the light.
Also havent cleaned the tank...ever been 3 years i think but my tank is a unique setup.

Sounds good. I'm okay with reapplying Fluon once a year (even more often if need be). I just want to avoid the mess Vaseline has made. It's too horrible to clean up that I'll be starting my colony from scratch (well, I'll keep the woodies).

Reason i dont need to clean my tank ever cause its a little bio dome lol.
Its a 4 foot fishtank that i set up a few years ago, its got a mesh lid, thick layer of fluon around the inside top edge.
Few inches of dirt from the garden full of loverly micro organisms that help break it all down.
A hollow log and a few egg cartons.
A couple thousand meal worms and beetles living in the dirt and 100000 woodies.
I throw in some dog food and veg scraps whenever i could be bothered and they thrive.
Woodies eat the food mealworms eat the scraps from the woodies including any dead woodies.
Whatevers in the dirt breaks down the rest.
It doesnt smell and the substrate doesnt get any deeper and ive had it running for 3 years as is.

My setup, pic of mealworms is after i lifted an egg cartoon off the dirt...

Wow, impressive. I never thought of breeding mealworms and woodies in the one container. I ended up getting of my mealworms a few months ago as they were too high maintenance (I did go to a fair bit of effort to separate pupae from the worms) and not really appropriate for my dragons.

thats unreal Bez84.
i have a spare 4 foot fish tank in the garage!!!

what kind of dirt did u use?
do you provide heat?

by doesnt smell, do you mean it doesnt smell much, or it doesnt smell at all?
