Now before I post this, I don't want this thread to turn into an argument over ethics and playing "god". I thought it was interesting, purely based on the fact that it leads the way for certain animals from that era to be repoduced, such as the Wooly Mammoth. Just wanted to share with those that may be interested in genetics and have a little read.

Geneticist George Church says he can create a neanderthal child | News.com.au

Thanks
Steph

That is interesting. I've always wanted to own a dinosaur. I say skip the Neanderthal and go for a T-Rex.

Personally I want a pet Tassie Tiger. That would scare my cattle dog & make it behave itself when we go for a walk - hahahahaha

Lol the first thing I thought of, was how cool the snakes would have been back then, and what differences they might have.... I would like to see that...

I have seen Dr. Beth Shapiro give a talk on why this sort of thing is pretty much impossible at the present time, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope there is a volunteer. I think the justifications given are dubious, the best reason for doing is just because we can!

I suppose any publicity is good publicity no matter how ridiculous it is.

Personally I can live without Marc Bolan's clone. Just let glam stay dead.

Love your work Peter, even if it seems wasted at times.

But just because we can does that mean we should? Havent they seen Jurassic park?

Why this assumption that neandethals were brutish & stupid? They were much stronger than us and had a higher brain volume. They were advanced tool users, used ritualised burial, created art and survived in some of Europe's harshest climates.

Most of the clowns referred to as "neanderthals" in this thread wouldn't last a week in the bush, far less if it was populated with cave bears, cave lions and mammoths.

We already have exotics causing issues around the world, I wonder how extinct animals would effect ecosystems? I'm all for bringing back extinct animals that are extinct due to humans though.

So...reintroduce Varanus priscus and Thylacoleo carnifex and chuck a few "Baru" (meko crocodilian)! You know you want to:).

We could replace mining with tourism...the Japs love a photo opp, and my childhood could start all over again!

I would love to see some extinct a ancient creatures back, doesn't mean I think it's a good idea though. It's like exotics, I would like to own one but I don't what them here.

I would want them here, but I doubt they'd survive outside zoos. As you no doubt are aware, our record of native extinction (both animal and human) since settlement has been appauling to say the least and many would argue that we do little about the impending problem until it's to late (human nature, I guess?). Maybe we should put our energy into what's left??

I agree the analogy I like compares us to frogs. If you have a frog in water and slowly warm it up the frog will just sit there until it cooks to death, if you drop a frog in hot water it will jump out.

We are the frog in cool water we know there are issues but won't do anything until its too late.

I wonder what class license would be needed to keep Megalania prisca ?
