There is actually a Broad Headed Snake management and recovery group amongst the Australian Zoos. A program is being devised within the ARAZPA (Australasian Regional Association of Zoo Parks and Aquaria) institutions to selectively breed the most genetically diverse individuals from specific populations that are already captive in these instiitutions. Once these animals have been successfully bred, a recovery population may possibly be made up of some of these animals and then distributed to other institutions for further breeding.
The aim is to produce a genetically diverse population in captivity, that may possibly be used by the Zoos for a release program should it ever be needed.
Before any of this happens, they must first control illegal poaching, Bush rock removal and fire regimes. Otherwise all the captive breeding and field research is for nothing.
