Can someone please identify my python!!

How old do you think he is. And what signs should I look out for to know if he is on the right track or signs that something is wrong..

While I would never deny someone advice on caring for animals, Could you please tell me if you are licenced or not. If no I have some advice that you should follow, Contact your local NPWS inform them of the situation and ask about obtaining a licence and putting the animal on that licence. You will find the NPWS are not always the enemy and can be very helpful when required. If you dont want to licence/record the animal than at least for goodness sakes please buy a few books such as "Care of Australian Reptiles in captivity" and "Care of Australian Pythons" and perhaps pm a few of the more friendly members and ask questions. Look through this site and learn as fast and hard as you can because you MUST have knowledge before attempting to care for any animal.

I had one go 7 months without a feed after hatching so dont worry they take a long time to starve and by look of him he aint starving. Id say hes only a few months old.

yeah mate leave it in the enclosure you have setup now, get a click clack setup together and put it in that offer it a feed then leave it for a few weeks to settle down.

Yes I have had my license for a month.. first snake though.

Not sure if you know this already or if some one else has already said it but you should also put a few hides in the tank/enclosure for your snake to hide in so he feels secure. At least 2, one at the warm end and one at the cool end of the enclosure.

There are also several good books which give a lot more detailed info "keeping carpet pythons" by Simon Kortlang and Darren Green is good for beginners just interested in one species and its not too expensive and available in most pet shops that sell reptiles. If you think you will be expanding to other reptiles in the future there is 'Care of australian reptiles in captivity' by John Weigel or "Keeping and breeding Australian Pythons" edited by Mike Swan.

not sure about the cleveland area, but there is a good reptile pet shop in Mt Gravatt called Pet City which would be able to help set you up for anything you need or just give advice

Found this by searching online, i've never been there but they say they sell reptile stuff so it might be worth going to next time your on the mainland....

Certainly looks like a coastal or inland python, maybe murray darling python, hard to tell from the pic. I would suggest trying him on a pinkie rat (saves the hassle of converting him from mice to rats later). With the pinkie thawed and warmed up a bit warmer than normal, so he can 'see' it, with tweezers jiggle it around him, tap him with it to see if he will strike for it. If he wont strike, try leaving it in a hide with him and check later if he has eaten it. Before trying to force feed, realise that you have to be so careful of the snakes jaw and toung. If you are too forceful and damage either the jaw or toung, the snake will probably not survive.
If you can give us any more details if it has ever eaten yet, shead yet or whatever, this can help us help you. You can try getting it to eat by putting a small segment (2cm) of rats tail in its mouthtowards the back of throat, to get it into feeding mode. If it starts downing the tail, quickly and gently poke in the pinkie and see if it will take that too.

To de-stress.... plenty of hides (things it can get in or under), nice and warm environment, darkness

Looks to me about 2 - 3 months old at the most, hard to tell from pic. What is its length?

1. He has two hides in the small enclose hes in now.
2. He hasn't eaten.
3. Not sure if hes shed.

Next week I will buy a heat mat and move him into a 8L click clack, leave him for a week and try him on a pinkie.

I will update this post with pics and results. Thank you all for your much appreciated help.

I wouldn't asume it needs an answer.

I would believe the answer would be nobody, seeings though when you buy a snake you should know that they live around 30 years, I'd want to know what I am getting myself into before I bought one.

How about next time you go rushing into buying an animal, you find out what is it, what it needs and how to look after it?

I don't care if you have a licence or not, if you don't... that would clear lots of things up on why you don't know what it is because it means the person you got it off is dodgey...

Ok I took all of this in and I got a bit jumpy as I am worried for my new friend.

To clarify..

YES I AM LICENSED!
.. I put him down as a coastal just by looking at pictures on the net however I was looking for a definitive answer (which has been given).

The person I bought it off was extremely dodgy obviously. First time breeder with no one to sell to and was pretty unconcerned as to who he was selling them to.

It's a messy situation but for now I want what is best for the snake.

Okay, that's cool...

As long as he had a licence, it should be okay, I am unsure where you are from but the thing is in Victoria... if the DPI were to knock on your door, and ask where did you get him from you gotta come up with an answer. They'll look at your book... So if the guy's dodgey, the legal documents are too... I don't work for them so I don't know what would happen.

All in all, there is heaps of information around... You'll get the hang of it pretty easy.

It would be a shame to lose him over a mistake someone else has made. I have all his details anyway so If this was the case then there would be big trouble for him.

Are you the 2nd person to own this snake or the 3rd ? you said the seller got the snake as a newborn from the breeder and then sell it to you, now the seller is a first time breeder, so did you get their licence details ? what species do they have on their books - the parents and the hatchlings i mean, then that's what it is.

My general advice is to get it feeding on rats asap, as you don't want an adult eating 10+ mice per meal.

By the way besides identifying the species of snake for you, we can pick out a suitable name for it too. Do you want this ? i'll start with Mysterio, because it's a mystery snake.

I am the second owner and yes I have the sellers details which I believe to be correct. As he is still small are you saying that pinky rats are a preferred option as when I have a 8ft python on my hands he will be use to feeding on rats?

Also, I've seen/heard of people feeding their larger pythons frozen rabbits
