how do all the people keeping snakes in click clacks put the thermostat probe in?

i'm getting 2 hatchies on the weekend and dont have the tank ready yet,...

also heat cord or heat mat?

thanks, Chris. :)

i put a hole in the top a bit bigger than an air hole then get some of those little plastic clips that they use for christmas lights and stick some on the side of the click clack then thread the probe through the hole.

I have multiple click clacks on one heat mat and thermostat and I stick the probe to the heat mat with a bit of blue tack over the top of the probe. Have to stick it down really well though, if it falls off the heat mat gets very hot.

i'm a bit worried about holes cos the snakes are meant to be tiny,...

so i'll try sticking it to the mat fro now and testing temps on the inside,..!

what a great idea, thanks! :)

I have never used thermostats for only a couple of tubs. i just make sure that the animals are never in a position to overheat and can always escape the heat. They are inside in a well insuated positon that I know will not get above 30 degrees regardless fo outside temperature. The wattage on the heat mat does not allow the tubs to overheat.

I will also point out that I have seen expensive animals in tubs that have been cooked because of thermostat failure.

Heat mats and cords both do the same job and the decision is about practicality. If you are going to keep the tubs on a bench then a mat is easier however in a bank heat cords can be easier.

I've alway put the a hole in the back of a tub and siliconed it up. I normally run a dummy tub with the probe in it, that way it is easier to pull the snakes out of the rack without a heap of cords and there is no silicone smell.

i found that the heat mat the geckos are on gets up to 40 without any probs, so i really do want to use a thermostat, i check temps every day for the geckos and will do the same for the new snakes,..

i have heat cord, but they'll be kept on a bench so i'll get a mat in the morning,... :)

the dummy tub and silicone!!
yet another great idea!!

thanks everyone, i'm glad i asked! :)

i have the probe between the heat mat and click clack...must be working cause when i get my bredli out he is nice and warm :)

awesome, so many good ideas i didnt think of, i feel kinda dumb!! :p

I just drilled a hole in the enclosure for the sensor to fit in. It then sits on the floor and then I put some tape around the outside so theres noway for the snake to get out.

I just used heat cord which I glued on to a piece of slate (7 dollars at Bunnings),which I cut to size. Glued some branches around. She moves around the from laying on the slate after feeding, to all various positions to regulate her temp. She loves hanging in the branches. She loves her food and feels totally contended in her enviroment. We handle her just about every day and she has never bitten. The setup was very cheap and easy to maintain

I don't use a thermostat as yet. I only use a large 25 watt heat mat on about a half of my click-clack. This gives him the opportunity to select hat ever temp he likes.

I do the exact same thing and my click clack for my Bredli remains around a constant 35 degrees at the hot end. For the thermometer, I used a soldering iron to make two holes the same diameter as the probes and they sit perfectly.

Measure the thin part of the probe cord, and match it up to the inside diameter of a rubber grommet:

Then drill a hole in the tub that matches the outside diameter of the grommet (the grooved bit). Then just either force the grommet over the probe tip and onto the cord, or if it's too tight, just cut the grommet on the side. You can then put the cord in through the slit, then push it firmly in place in the hole of the tub.
Looks much more professional when done right, instead of holes too big or messy silicone.

Sorta like these examples:

You can get grommets from Jaycar or DSE.
Here's a 6mm cord hole size grommet, with a 9.5mm outside diameter:

i use a heat cord and just have 1/3 of the click clack ontop of it. i have 2 hides in there too and he just moves around as he needs too... i check on him everyday and hes never too cold. never had a problem feeding/digesting or shedding.
when i put him in his proper enclosure tho he will have thermostat etc..

I only used a hot glue gun and have had no problems at all with it. The heat off the slate is gentle and allows her to regulate her temp, just from height of the slate and distance from it, with no need for a thermostat.

If you can avoid a thermostat it wont break down and cook the snake. Use a large enough click clack so part of the tub is well away from the heat then the snake can escape the heat if required. Make sure the click clack is ventilated.

I need to set up a click clack in the next week so it can be all ready for when i bring my snake home..ive never done this before so have some questions

If you dont use a thermostat , how do you know if the snake is warm enough or too hot? (sorry if thats a stupid question!)

Ive been looking at heat mats and thermostats , so many different ones! Can you buy a heat mat that already has a thermostat attatched?

Just want to make sure im getting everything right, hope u dont mind me hijacking your thread

thanks all, i'm using a siestma 7L tub with a cave on the warm side, cave on the cool side, small water bowl on the cool side and a scrunched up face washer to make them feel a bit more secure,....tehyre both curled up in teh same cave constantly,..tehy will be getting seperated soon though.

i put the probe under a bit of heat mat thats hanging out and tested the temps a million times using an infra red temp gun, i love that thing!!

i fed them about 3 hours after bringing them home (sat night) and they both scoffed down their mouse, by this morning the lump was already gone! :p

heres a quick pic of my snappy bundles of joy, my friend is sending the proper foto shoot thru later! :)
