oooook so i have recently laid a deposit down for a 6 month old spotted, which i will be recieving in the next week or so. the guy im getting it off is giving it to me in a click clack which he said ill be able to keep it in for the next 6 months or so, the only thing i will really need is a heat source. so for the past couple of days ive been going a little nuts with research on the best way to do so...this has only left me very confused....so i have a few questions for ya'll:

1. is there a brand of heat mats that you would strongly recommend?
2. will i be needing a thermostat to control the temp of the heat mat? whats the deal with them..?
3. i will get a temp gun and was wondering, as its point and get a reading, where should i be pointing it to within the click clack to get the most accurate reading?

thats about it for now :) haha im sure i will think of more though

thanks in advance guys!

id go a heat cord imo and yes mate get a thermo, yes the thermo will control the heat matt, iv heard of some people hooking them upto the cool side but that is not what there meant for.

sweet, and are there any useful methods for regulating the temp between the hot and cool sides? and also with feeding, how do i know when to go from pinkies to fuzzies to adult mice?

Heat cords are amazing...

put holes on the top of the hot side, and bottom of the cool side (to create air flow) if thats what you mean by regulation?

When it doesn't leave a big lump anymore, and when they're happy to take two of the smaller size, I'd go up...
Youll be absoloutly shocked at how much their neck stretches

ok great :) and by regulation i meant controling the temp differences of the hot and cool sides, eg not letting my cool side get too hot and vice versa
and does anyone know about the temp guns? as in where in the click should i be taking my temps from?

a decent heat cord or mat will do, put the cord or mat under a third of the enclosure only with a hide over it. You will have little control over the cool end and setting it up like this is your only option. The heat gun needs to be aimed in the enclosure at the floor where the heat mat or cord is.

thanks for all the help, much appreciated. just wish i had it already :(

I reccommend the Reptapet brand heat mats, they have a range that features built in thermostats. I own several. I've seen them on Ebay recently, if that helps. Simply pick a temperature on there and then monitor with your thermometer and adjust accordingly.

does anyone know of a case where a snake has slithered itself into a knot? lol silly i know, but still curious...

Also can someone please take a look at this for me and tell me wether this will be ok for my new spotty just while its in its click clack? i will end up getting a good heat cord when i put it in its proper enclosure

i would say the mat is probably to big for your click clack, that one is 28x28cm i have the same size for a 2 1/2 foot tank. and that brand would do fine i would recomend smaller size but also take into consideration where the tank is going, i use mats but i have a very cold house so i actually have to heat the room that my snakes are in useing a gas heater. With a click clack that shouldnt be a problem but just in case be prepared.

to check the size of the mat, when your on the add scroll down until you see a zoomed in image of the tag, i hope i could help

Wattage is not a problem if it is controlled by the thermostat. It will turn off or dim when it is warm enough. Remember to aim at the surface your snake will be on. Temp guns don't work through the lid or through glass. Here's a photo of a click clack showing the thermostat probe on the warm end. It has a wooden perch for an arboreal snake, a water bowl and a hide. I use cardboard boxes, as they are easy to replace when soiled and it's easy to upsize as your snake grows. When they hit adult size you can go for something fancier.

+1. I got mine from amazing amazon. I am using it for a click clack. They are a bit more expensive, but worth it IMO.

Just make sure when you burn the hole in the side of the click clack for probe of the thermastat that its a tight fit as little snakes can get out of the tightest spots trust me, even plug on the outside with bluetack to make sure.

thanks for all the help guys :D
im sure the little dude will love what i do for him

Heat cord all the way.
I don't like heat matts - from experience lol.

Also, make sure the thermostat probe is suitably pinned to the bottom of the enclosure if you put it IN the enclosure.
Otherwise, the snake may push it so it loses contact with the bottom of the enclosure. The next thing you know, it turns on the heat mat / cord
to try and raise what it thinks is a lowered temperature being read from the probe..

The other way around it is to put the mat/cord on a dimmer so it can't peak too high, use something with a sensible wattage, or put the thermostat probe
outside of the enclosure.

I have my thermostat probe in my Woma's click clack, because it has a nice red display thermometer and I get to see what the temperature is for the snake, as opposed to under the enclosure. I have a heavy tile on the probe so it stays in place.
