Sigh, there are just too many words that I see on here frequently misspelled - and the last time I started a thread on it I was threatened...
But the one word that really makes me cringe, and I see it in at least one thread a day - enclosure. It's not a hard word to spell, yet so many get it wrong - encloser, encloshure, encloseer, inclosure, etc...
Oh, and lose and loose, they are different. Just like bred and breed. Argh, there are so many. But I do have a giggle every time I see some one using 'defiantly'.

I think a lot of it has too do with how tyred you are or how much you've had two drink as well as youre country of burth...

dont get too hung up on badly spelt words, it makes you look like a spelling grinch, and if that's all you've got to worry about then maybe you need to get a hobby !

I'm assuming the multitude of errors in the above post is a wind up?

Just like bred and breed.

Don't forget 'bread!'

regardless how you spell it , spell check on most computers will automatically change it to DEFIANTLY

It must feel so good up on the high horses of the people that were in a position to use our wonderful education system to it's fullest, I mean how on earth did you find time to study in between pony club and piano lessons. Get over yourselves.

Oh and Jamie you must have been bored.

I can see this turning into a bun fight soon, but just to put in my tuppenceworth, steve1, to answer your thread posted above, not everybody went to pony club, nor piano lessons, but they did get taught properly, and took care with their spelling and grammar.

I used the education system to my advantage and took everything I could from them, like knowledge and learning, I never saw the classroom as a place to muck about and waste my time there. I was there to do something, and I did it, along with many others who took their schooling seriously. We now have the advantage of being able to spell properly without even having to think about it. So, yes, mis-spelled words are annoying.

Some people find mis spelled words annoying others find know it alls annoying. Just worry about what your doing not others

Why Dipcdame? because some people were not as fortunate as you and couldn't place all their energy on schooling during their formative years. Just remember not everyone's circumstances in life are as conducive to gaining an education as yours may have been, and therefore they would have even more right to be annoyed at their poor spelling than you.

Not everyone that can't spell misbehaved in class either.

What circumstances in life would prevent someone from gaining knowledge? Isn't it something we gain all the time?? I don't consider myself a 'fortunate' person, I was an ordinary run-of-the-mill b-grade student!

Could you be worry about learning how to spell when you have terminally ill family member or something along those lines and what about learning disabilities

True Hildy, I agree
I was only considering kids who go to school who mess around and don't WANT to learn, then expect everyone to put up with their deficiencies
I trust it wasn't a relative of yours nor that you were the person having to deal with it.

Apologies Steve, that's terrible, then yes, in comparison, I guess you could call me fortunate. Geez, I've never backpedalled this quick before!!!

Those with such exceptional circumstances are not what I was referring to in this conversation HILDY and steve 1, and obviously those are sad situations and we should take those into consideration.

I am referring to those that are too lazy to simply take some time to improve their writing skills, and I feel that this is more common than those that have been genuinely disadvantaged or deprived. Some of us find it harder than others, but even so, it should not be something that is then suddenly classed as unimportant by those that may struggle more than others.

What irritates me the most is the attitude that people have towards the language. I cannot understand how so many people consider being able to communicate effectively as not important? Such poor writing detracts from the point you are trying to get across, and can make you seem uneducated, lazy or both. I also don't understand how people that do write correctly and happen to dislike witnessing the language get butchered on a daily basis are being called names?

And how do you know the individual circumstances of everyone with a spelling problem?

And why are exceptional circumstances not applicable?

Me and five others bunking down in abandoned warehouses at 14yo didn't even stop to consider whether our circumstances were exceptional.

Look, lets just say that to the literate, mis-spelling is annoying as it interrupts the flow of reading, that statement casts no aspertions on those who can't for genuine reasons, as Melissa just said, it's more the ones who can't be bothered with that communication thing. My brother is dyslexic, and his writing still annoys the heck out of me, I don't condemn him for it, I just say that yes, the interruption of the flow as I said, is annoying!! Phew!!

I defiantly hate anythink more........

These days I even hear reporters and news readers saying it AAAAAarrrrrrh......

I don't know, so I don't openly attack individual people for their spelling errors - I am merely venting about the attitude that some have towards the language.

Exceptional circumstances and those that have been disadvantaged aren't applicable to the conversation as these people are not who I am criticizing - Example: dEez R MoRe dA tYp3 oF ppLz D@t I aM TalKing BouT. I also find it irritating that some words are so commonly misspelled, just as some of us find it really irritating when people bite their nails for example. Now, people may bite their nails due to serious stress/exceptional circumstances, or simply out of habit. Either way, it can still be very annoying.

Genuinely sorry to hear things were tough for you..

What was getting to me is you dont know them and you have never walked in their shoes, yet lets all attack their spelling. They probably self concious about their spelling, so why rub it in guys?
