I know the pet shop, and I've seen the dragons. It appeard to me to be a case of nose rubbing and when I saw it, it didn't appear to be too bad.

This is exactly the reason i don't want it to to become legal in NSW to sell herps in pet shops...

This is actually the stated reason if I am not mistaken why pet shops were not allowed to sell herps in NSW. (Jeff H. Please correct me if I am mistaken here.)

The reason why the Herp Trader was initially suggest by Brian of the Herp Shop was so that is customers could easily get into direct contact with the breeders as this is the best place from which to obtain your animals. Breeders have to know what they are doing otherwise they would not breed anything  Pet shops only need to know how to buy and sell "Stuff" and I do not consider herps - or most other animals for that matter as "Stuff".

So the trick is to purchase your Herp Products from a supplier that knows and understands them, like the Herp Shop, and get your herps from a breeder - of which the Herp Trader is a good place to find them.

I know this reads like a shameless plug but it is exactly these principals that the Herp Shop and Herp Trader are founded on!

There are exceptions to every generalisation. I believe it possible that there are Pet Shops out there that could do it well but there are none that I have visited in Melbourne... and I have visited quite a few.

There is a pet shop here in sydney named kellyville pet's who have a program where they will walk you through getting your RK license, then allow you to choose what animal you wanna keep, (be it turtles, snakes or lizards) then take you through a day long course and show you all the proper husbandry techniques required, then at the end of that day you sit a small exam then are givin the reptile of your choice (from a regersted breeder), as well as everything needed to keep it ie: cages heating vitamin etc... I think that this is as close to legally selling reptiles NSW petshop's should get, at least this way will turned off the "oh thats a cute baby turtle or beardie lets take it home even though we don't know how to look after it" impulse buy's some people will make, yes it may be expensive (heaps) but at least the animals will be well cared for.
sorry to ramble on just my 2 cent's

People!

Pet stores, ........ in the public eye, are the end all in knowledge and help for pet help and health (inc herps).............WHY and I ask WHY would anyone suggest volunteering to help a pet store in the care of herps!.............THEY SHOULD KNOW!!!!

If you go into a pet store and see something not right.......get onto the proper authorities!
I recently went to a herp store i DARWIN and I was appauled.....there were shed skins form pythons that were old......and I mean old, two, three different sheds that showed the difference in time.....
fecies buildup for at least a month..? maybe more
I havent said anything yet, still monitoring what happens.

But as far as knowledge and experience goes, I have a dozen pythons myself and I know how much cleaning is involved....Bugger all....... Only once a week to clean an enclosure.

Sorry guys...getting too involved..........I just get anoyed when I see how bad some animals are kept......

Has anyone in Melbourne gone to the Melbourne Reptile Warehouse? Just interested :)

I hope they do! Then I can make posts on the internet about how much more I know about reptiles than the people in the shops.

There's plenty of gooduns too. Pet City in Brissy is pretty good. Their animals are in top condition, although a tad pricey for me. As are the ones at everything reptile who's prices are alot better. It's only a few that make the trade look bad. The two bad ones in my area have just been ummm...inspected over selling licence apps for 5 bucks each. It's actually illegal to even supply them. Customers must contact the EPA themselves.

they are the ones in Victorian Markets? , not the best I would think with such a high traffic flow through the shop those animals would be very stressed
