There was a brief discussion yesterday at the gathering at Roy Pails about herpers and their affinity with ferns. Roy has quite a substantial fernery along the side of his house. We have one in the enclosed court yard where out turtles live. I know Brian at the Herp Shop also has a bunch of ferns growing.

What is it about herpers and ferns? My theory is that most herps and ferns are ancient in their origins. There is something quite endearing about a living thing that got it evolution pretty close to right many millennia ago.

Who else out there keeps a captive population of ferns?

I have a single large one in my front yard about 4ft high and 8 or 9 ft in diameter, its my pride n joy, i planted it from a small pot 8 yrs ago. Looks great early morning, covered with droplets of dew.
Dont think theres any real connection, other than an appreciation of nature/beauty . Im into bonsai too. :D

i no a cuple of teh younger members (hee hee members) really really love their ferns.....marijuana is a fern right?

We have some Cyathea cooperi that we planted from small pots about 4 years ago. One of them is now sporting fronds 3 meters long which finish above the roof line. Some of the Australian tree ferns are very quick growers given the right conditions.

Part of the challenge for us is ensuring that enough direct sun light gets through for the turtles.

I'm a mad keen gardener, but no prediliction for ferns though.
Plants only really count if you grow them from seed, cutting or spore though :)

I LOVE tree ferns, I think they're the coolest lookin plants, Ive got a Northfolk Is Tree fern in a pot out back and they have been known to grow over 15m high(largest is recorded at 22m).

i like grass trees (formally known as blackboys) i know there not fern but i like em!!!

Just make sure that they havn't been dug out of the bush and stuck a tag on them. most times the root base isn't big enough and they die. they can take up to a year to die so u must b carefull.

my biggest loves are grass trees, cycads (awesome), treeferns, staghorns etc with those air plants and of corse all types of ferns.

Yeah, I'll be careful, I used to have a very small seed grown one in a pot untill someone knocked it over and killed it. :?

they need really good drainage. otherwise the y get root rot and die. oh and some native fertiliser is good.

Cut back the foliage enough and the root ball will usually be big enough.
