visit dogs on line. it's an aussie site. heaps of useful info. lists breed specifc breeders. avoid buying from local papers and pet shops as you have no idea of pups history and you can buy an expensive pup with heaps of health issues.

RSPCA. places like that are good as you get to see and interact with the animal and cheap and you save a life. (even if it's not quite the specific dog you want) Otherwise dogzonline as previously mentioned has a bunch of breeders. Not sure about Qld but vic have the Melbourne Pet and Animal Expo. (and possibly other expo things) where breeders chill and display their dogs in show or jus to people wandering around.

I bought my dogs from terrible 'back yard' breeders. My dad and I felt so sorry for one of the pups there we ended up taking him and his mistreated brother....ended up in various $1000 vet bills for spyro's leg, but it is worth it. I wouldn't swap my boys for anything in the world :)

Be careful who you buy from, look at the parents and the other pups there. You will be able to tell if they are a good and honest breeder by the condition of ALL their dogs, living conditions and if they supply paper work on vaccinations, history, pedigree forms, etc. Question them as much as you can to make sure they know their stuff and this will also help you!

As woma_Wild said the above site is your best bet. The RSPCA is good but you could be buying a dog with severe health issues and problems as the RSPCA usually don't know the history of the dog itself...if you want a rescue and are willing to put in the extra time and $$$, a rescue shelter will be good.

Depends really, are you looking for a top notch pooch or just a family/life companion?

Best of luck mate!

I always find something when I visit and donate stuff. I always fall in love with at least one! haha. And it makes you feel so much better saving a life! :) dont feel pressured to do this if you're after something in particular but it's just a nice gesture :)

Just saved this girl from death row on monday, she was to be put down 3pm tuesday.
She is the most placid beautiful Staffy I've seen in a long time.
Just have to wait until sunday to pick her up as she is being freighted from NSW to Vic for me. :)

When there are so many beautiful creatures like this destined for an early end, I simply cannot understand why people insist on (unknowingly) supporting the questionable puppy trade(backyard breeders and pet shops).

Go have a look at your nearest RSPCA, Lost Dogs Home or animal refuge before you consider a new pup.

Save a life instead of encouraging people to bring more into the world. :D

I do agree with you. My last german shepherd I got from the rspca. Had him for 14 years and lost him to cancer 6 years ago. I miss him.
My new shepherd, now 5 years old, I got from a breeder and he cost me big money from the start - he's allergic to meat and meat by products. poor baby.

jacques asked for a forum so hence my reply. good site for pures but way too much doggy politics for me. dog ppl can be quite painful to deal with lol.

I agree, to a certain extent, however very much like APS, if you manage to wade through the crud, there is an absolute wealth of information and knowledgable people on DOL, and a lot of them are very very willing to help :)

While I have nothing against ethical registered breeders of purebred dogs, and there are a few different breeds I've got my eye on, I do quite like the saying "when you adopt, you save two lives: the dog you've bought, and the one you've made room for."

If however you need a puppy, I'd strongly suggest going with a purebred, from a registered, ethical breeder.

Also, you have to put up photos, it's mandatory :)

I saved two dogs from animal welfare league of Australia in Queensland back in 2011 , they were rescued from the floods.

Also consider whIle buying a pure, selectively bred puppy from a "approved" breeder the possible health problems associated with heavily selectively bred animals. Sure it may have been hip checked and vet checked but has it really been proven not to have problems with things like breathing and living the life a dog should be free to do (like run around the park playing fetch for instance). If you can find something from the pound you love then by all means save it but remember you need to look at it every day for 10-20 years so it needs to be something you love in all aspects.

That's not fair :p My Thundercleese (possibly ridgy x) was the result of a terrible decision to get a BYB puppy from the trading post. He's 40+ kg, has HUGE fear aggression issues (result of poor breeding), and is (in my opinion) a very ugly dog. He's skinny and has awful fur, and has wierd ears that don't quite sit right. I also wouldn't trade him for the world. I adore him, and I could never ask for a dog more devoted to me. Aside from his fear issues, he's the most well-behaved dog I know.

My pooch was a 'free to good home' add in my local Coles, I went to have a look and he was mine from the start. I understand getting a pure bred has a certain appeal, but I don't think I would ever pay big dollars for a dog. My mum says he is so obsessed with me he doesn't even look at anyone else when I'm around <3 I love him to bits :)

Thanks for all the replies
will have a look at my local rspca and dog pound
hopefully i find something i like and safe a life :)

f you join Dogzonline, you can post a thread in Rescue asking what dogs/pups people have in foster care, in your area that might suit you. They have quite a few rescue groups in Qld, and some lovely people doing the fostering, and are very helpful.

Have you looked at petrescue.com.au ? A lot of rescue groups advertise their dogs on there as well. Also if you have your heart set on a particular breed a lot of breed clubs run their own breed rescue.

My dogs were actually free to a good home. One of them didn't pass the GAP (greyhound adoption program) testing, we ended up with her and soon two more greyhounds followed her. Plus it saved us a 4hr trip to Townsville to visit GAP.

Thanks for all the replies
I have been looking on rspca website
i dont mind cross breeds thier some off the best dogs
just looking for a friendly small to meduim size dog .

Definitely dogzonline is the place to go. Most canine association breeders (ie the ones that abide by the rules of number of litters, age of ***** at first whelp, certified healthy breeding stock, clean pedigrees, etc) list their pups there, and listed also are the older dogs that many require rehoming. That's the best place if you are wanting a particular breed. It's also a good place to research breeds if you are not sure which breed, or if you want to look for specific characteristics in a breed.
there are also numerous lists of dogs requiring rehoming.
also the breed club in your state, if you are looking at a specific breed, will probably have a rescue service, or a list of rehoming needs. Two of my bitches are top line pedigree breeders, and my other two are re homed, through club and dogzonline connections.
yes the pound is also a great place, if you are not concerned about the dog's background, type, etc, but as described above, you do need to be aware and careful. Many people go to the pound looking for a dog, and come home with a not totally suitable one because of the emotional side of seeing those dogs. Don't get me wrong, I have also had incredible bonds with rescued from pound dogs, but there is a higher degree of risk, and the last thing a rescued dog needs is to be returned to the pound because the adopter didn't make a rational choice.
hope that helps! And good luck finding your perfect canine match!

Good idea! They might have a "puppies free to good home" section... Food for olives :)

Just joking dont get ya nickers in a twist!

petrescue.com.au is a great site for welfare groups all over Australia
