hey guys. mum wont let me get anything more than what i have atm due to the electrical bill.
how much would you guys say that your average bill is? and roughly how much do you think is the enclosures costing? as id be willing to pay for some of it to get more critters.
cheers guys. i would really appreciate this info if some of you know...
thanks

If you know the wattage of your heat source, and how many hrs it is on per day as well as your kilowatt hr charge, it isn't hard to figure out the running costs of an enclosure. Maybe use that to convince mum.

i roughly pay over summer $400 a quarter for the reptile room electricity. and over winter that can go up to $600 a quarter. the big power drawer is my beardies they use alot of heat and alot of light. the pythons do not use much as over summer dont have heat on all that much but over winter anything thing that is not breeding the next season will consume a decent amount of electricity with a constant heat on so they can get fed up for the next year. in my opinion snakes are alot more energy efficient.

cheers D

ohk that easy?
i might have a look into it. i know the wattage of my current enclosures. although for what i want it would cost a lot less. i want some geckos. so no uv needed and only on if not two small heat sources.
so whats the equation then?

$400-$600 quartely for the enclosures by themselves. how many do you have running

I usually pay $700 to $800 in summer and around $1200 during winter months. Have ducted air con, projectors etc, and a pool. There all guzzlers

are u heating the gex with heat mats?

i cant remember exactly, but i think its abotu 14c per kilowatt hour, so if its a 25W heat mat, i think its around 10c a day,...if u run it 24/7

its nothin greally, watching an hour a day less telly or not using the dryer more than makes up fro what a few little critters use.

my last bill was $373, thats running 300W for 12 hours in beardy enclosures, 3 heat panels on thermostats on 24/7, another 75 W globe fro the diamond 6 hours a day, a 100W globe for the girl bredlis 24/7.
the gex get their heat by sitting ontop of the jungles heat panels.
constantly microwaving their heat bags, AND LIVING COSTS FOR US. the tv is generally on fro 8 hours cos i fall asleep in front of it, everytime we flick a light switch at least 6 down lights come on (and they suck heaps of power, our power bill dropped by $80 per quarter just by turning lights off when we leave the room)

DTulip, do u have ur reptile room on a different meter?
or is that teh power bill fro ur household as well?

its cheap as chips to heat ur animals

Last bill was $1656 and Ive just put in a pool too. Reckon the next bill will be over $2k.
Do I win?

chris, yeah i have a seperate meter for the reptile room so i can keep track of what i am spending. i have a mate who is a sparky who set it up on the cheep for me in the same box as my house just with another clicker and a diveret from the mains. it means i get two bills for the one property every three months.

and yes code red you do win so far you green house loving so and so. :)

costa, i have six enclosures just for the dragons with 100w in each and a compact fluro in each. plus five large snake enclosures and click clacks and heat mats as well

on one of tony harrisons videos he mentions his bill to be as high as 6k

Power bill $$$$$

Mine is usually around $1100-1150.....but I do work from home as well......pay it get over it and enjoy life......"Den" on aps had a great idea a couple of years ago which I followed......[4] pairs of spotties [macs] and there is my power bill paid for the year....cheers solar 17 [Baden]

20 odd reptiles + server runnning 24/7 + aircon + wife = $800 quater!!

Just got mine $1009 ,Heating 9 enclosures and an incubator and there are 7 people in our household ,I was surprised it wasn`t a lot more : )

Gday ALL
Just wondering if anyone has setup a 12v system, so they could run off solar. I dont mean u have solar power connected to your mains either. Seperate system for your reptiles only.
Thanks
Andy

That sounds like a good idea, but would they also need to be connected to the main supply in case of low stores of electricity??

to be honest I dont know...I am off to my second home (bunnings) later this afternoon to get a meter to check up on useage. This topic will be more and more relevant once the global power trading scheme (or whatever its name is) kicks in....electricity prices are set to double in the next year or so...or so they say.

I would be keen to install solar...but the only turn of to me is...if the power grid is down..so is your solar....the reason I was given was to protect electricians who may have to come and check power etc..surely they can approve an isolation switch for solar powered homes to protect them. IMHO this is one of the main reasons why solar would be good...I have a mate in Adelaide and he experiences blackouts from power outages several times a month.

so whats the equation then?

watts/1000 = kW x hours of operation = kWh x kWh rate = cost

So for a 40W heat cord running 24/7 at full power, with a KW hr costing say 18cents.

40/1000 x 24 x $0.18 = 17.28 cents per day

If you are using a thermostat and it isn't running at full power then it will cost less, and your kWh charge will vary depending on the company you are with and you may have on and off peak or just a flat rate which will alter things.
