Hey guys,
Currently in english we are looking at issues. I am doing some work on the trade of exoctic reptiles in Australia and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good web sites or anything that had some good information on the subject.
Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance, Simon

Give AQIS a call and see if they have any info packs.
Your probably not going to get much insider info unless you already know the right people.

Simon,

Can you be a bit more specific? Trade of exotics into Australia, or the movement of exotics that are already here? And are you talking about just reptiles, or other things like exotic parrots etc.

Whoops I just realized I spelt exotic wrong on my heading. Oh well.
Hix,
I was mainly looking for information on the illegal trade of reptiles within Australia. So anything really, it could be smuggling into Australia or just the trade of them already in Australia. I already have a little but was just wondering if anyone knew of any good sites.
Cheers, Simon

Simon,

I had to do a brief presentation for Conservation Biology at Uni some years ago, and I spoke about the illegal trade in parrots out of Australia. A book I found, that you may find of use, is "Wildlife Crime Policy and the Law: An Australian Study", by Don McDowell, 1997, Australian Govt. Publishing Service. A bit heavy going but there may be some chapters relevant to what you are doing. Would certainly make a great reference.

Otherwise, the illegal smuggling of reptiles into Australia comes under the auspices of the Department of Environment and Heritage (formerly Environment Australia) and is enforced at the borders by the Australian Customs Service. Would strongly suggest you contact the Dept of Environment and Heritage (in Canberra) as they may be able to answer any specific questions you might have.

Hope this helps. :p

Sorry Sobby, I am unable to help on this subject but it sounds like a fascinating, if difficult, subject to tackle! Good luck with it mate and hope you get something publishable at the end of your research.
