i hope this hasnt been covered before, i couldnt find anything new as im on holidays atm i thought i might start a thread on favourite aussie holidays and why!! :)for me i love going to the gold coast mainly for the beaches, tourism and family entertainment so where do you go and why? :)

I haven't been a great deal of tourist places but if you want to have a bloody interesting weekend. Go to south Australia, port Linclon and go shark diving. It's an amazing experience which I will be doing again when I have some spare cash and a free weekend.

We go to Fraser Island a fair bit!! i luv the beach and the creeks and lakes are amazing, i like camping and the wild life an baby dingo's aww!! :)

Cairns and surrounds is my all time favorite holiday spot. Great climate (beats the hell out of Melbourne) and so many beautiful spots to explore, we go every year and there are still places on my "must see" list. Atherton tablelands and Daintree are my favorite spots, and of course the reptile spotting oppertunities are great.
A close second would have to be NT- Litchfield, Fogg Dam, Katherine Gorge. The scenery is spectacular and wildlife abundant. The only thing is I find it a touch hot.

+1. I go every year for the diving. 3 day liveaboard trips on the outer reef are my idea of heaven

I've been all around Australia and up and down the middle. My favourite places are Edith falls in NT, Bullo River station in NT, and Le Grand National Park in WA (specifically staying in lucky bay). Rotnest island off the coast of WA was beautiful too, and had great diving/snorkeling. Otherwise the red centre is beautiful, was dry when I was there but I'd love to see it in the rain!

I like what is available on the gold coast for entertainment, nightlife etc

Nelsons bay, but probably more for the nostalgia because I used to go all the time when I was a kid

Litchfield NT was pretty awesome!!

Wee Jasper is beautiful and it has awesome caves! (Nothing like abseiling 50m into a cave that is ankle deep in bat poop! Spectacular cave though!)

The best holidays however are the ones were me and my mates pick a random spot we haven't been to and camp. Bonfire, no reception, tents, snags, beer.... awesome!

I've done Melb to Perth via a car and Daintree to Melb as well.... Out of all the places me and the wife have been Esperance in WA is right up there. Just love the open road really where there's no traffic and the only things im beeping at are wildlife to get off the road instead of Richard craniums. Last one we did the last traffic light I passed was Cardwell NQ and did not hit another till Echuca on the Mexican border (and that was through outback Qld and outback NSW).

Were hoping to either do Broome to Perth or Broome to Darwin next to close up some of the gaps in the map (trying to go around the Australian map as best we can)

If you want to go camping, try Diamond Head its just near Laurieton and about 3.5 hours north of sydney. It has great fishing, snorkling, surfing, swiming fires. Ive been going every year for the last 11 years, its amazing.

We have been going to bribie island and staying a few times a year, its boring if your not into walking and fishing, theres not much shops around . but i like it haha great fishing if you know the spots and one of the few places your regularly see dugongs!

but if i must say a destination that's my all time (so far) favourite, it would be Cooktown.
It is small and quiet but gorgeous views and beachs, plenty to do and see there.
even anywhere along from Cairns to Cooktown along the coast line is gorgeous and i highly recommend getting up there for a look!
a few pics from a recent trip up there!
